Having trouble finding trouble shooting tips for A/C. (no pun intended)

I put one can of refrigerant into the line, it got cold but the air never did. the pressure gauge the can came with read 0 the entire time is there a leak? should i replace the compressor? how can i tell if the a/c clutch is engaging?

thanks for any help

How can you tell if the clutch is engauging? Use your eyes and ears, look down at the compress. Next to the pulley is a plate, if the plate is stationary its not engauged. When everything is working correctly an electromagnet pulls the plate into the pulley, (makes a click noise) turning the compressor on.

Most compressors wont turn on , if the charge is too low.
It sounds like you have a huge leak if it was still 0psi after 1 can, did you not hear it leaking anyplace, or see a cloud of smoke shooting out? Most of that DYI recharge kit stuff has a green dye/oil in it, you should trace the lines and see if you can see oil anyplace, its meant for a black light and special glasses, however with a leak that big you should see some traces.

To fix it the correct way, you should, find the leak, fix that, replaced the receiver/dryer, then have a vacuum put on the system for like 20+min, to get all the air and mositure out of the system. then recharge it.

Great advice, but not a lot of them actually have the dye in it unless you specifically buy it that way. If you have a big enough leak that it never left zero it should be easy to find. When you add refrigerant you're also adding oil. With a leak that big check the bottom of your compressor and see if its wet. Its common for the Honda AC compressor to start leaking in the middle of it where its sealed together. If thats the case you'll notice oil on it.

Also, don't forget if its over charged it wont kick on as well. You have a high pressure and a low pressure switch to keep from blowing something.
