not to loud, since the turbo acts as a muffler.

For some reason, the CRX of doom comes to mind. Ever seen the one with the entire turbo sticking like a foot out of the hood?

I saw some clown in an accord the other day with a hole cut in his hood and the air filter sitting out of it with a coffee can to route the air. He thought he was bad-ass!

Sorry. That was off topic, but I wanted to hit him... In the face. With a truck.

The turbo works by using the pressure drop across the turbine. For example, if your exhaust makes 5 pounds of backpressure and your turbo needs 5 pounds of pressure drop to reach full speed, then there will be 10 pounds of backpressure in your manifold. Now take away the exhaust, and you only need 5 pounds of backpressure, thus speeding up the spooling by taking away half the work.

but say if from the down pipe, its all just straight pipe, no cat, no resonator or anything...would that be the same thing...or would it still cause restriction..?

open dp is LOUD on a turbo car. trust me. i have a 3" cutout, and theres NO mistaking it for a real exhaust.

ive had both open DP, and catless 2.25" exhaust on my car when it was n/a

the actual exhaust was by FAR louder than open DP

the only probl. with just having a down pipe and no exhaust to connect to it is the exhaust going into the car while you are driving and you dieing because of co2 poison.

The restriction is going to be based on the size of the pipes. By using no cat, no muffler you could use a smaller diameter pipe because the parts that cause the mose retrictions are gone. Keep in mind that with what exhaust shops refer to as "import style fart cans" there really isn't any pressure being made there. Leaving the cat. On a dyno the difference between a stock cat, a high flow cat, and straight pipe all flowing through the same exhaust was only at best a 1-3 hp difference. I would keep the cat and muffler and go with the slightly larger pipe.

I'd say with an NA application that 2.25" to 2.5 is going to be a good setup.
For turbo applications I'd say 2.5" to 3" is a good size.
