noob turbo questions

ok so i am in the process of selling my old g2 and want to get a civic and turbo the stock motor. I may also be able to use my original LS motor out of my integra, b/c i have a b16 in there right now and my ls motor is just laying around. I originally wanted a dx hatch b/c it would be the lightest but the problem with that is it has a d16y7 motor...is it worth turboing that at all, because i've been reading around and checking the turbo list and walkthrough and everything and it seems like most people use the y8 motor...so should i get an ex then probably? although its like 300 more pounds heavier. Also, is it safe to run a turbo kit with stock internals on a y8? i wouldn't be running that much boost maybe like 7 or 9 lbs.

i dont know much about the y7 and y8 motors so i cant answer that....

running 7 pounds will work......so will 9 but if your gunna run 9 make sure u have a good tune.....tune is the main part to a turbo.....do u know what ur gonna do for it yet? size fuel injectors?

im gonna be running a dohc zc stock at 10 lbs and see how that goes on a good tune......:what:

just buy the dx and do a mini me head swap. this will give you maybe 20 more horses plus vtec. then turbo that.

well i may be noobish to turboing, but a few of my buddies are not. they will be the ones that help me along in this project so i dont really have to worry about that...I wish it would be just that easy to swap the ls motor in but there would be a few snags...1.) it has about 140k on the motor, 2.) I sold the ls tranny so i would have to get an ls tranny since d-series tranny's wont bolt up im assuming. 3.) one of the motors mounting points is cracked so the block would either have to be replaced or rewelded...So i think i would just turbo the stock civic motor. what kind of numbers/track times could u expect with either a y8 or y7?

oh and with this mini me swap...integra owners do something similar im thinking....ls/vtec - ls block with a b16 or b18c1 head...but some have found this very unreliable...i want to keep this car reliable.

ive seen tons of people do it and have no problems. its all in the shape of the head and how well you install it.

no the ls motor has 140k on it..
i didn't buy a civic yet im just tryin to get ideas on whats the best thing to do.
but i think im probably going to turbo the stock civic motor. would like a dx with a y7 motor be faster or would an ex with a y8 motor be faster even tho its alot heavier? thanks.

stock? the ex would be faster. but if you do the mini me you will have the d16y8. then boost it and....... sweetness.

wouldn't a mini me swap have the engine have more compression which isn't all that great for boost?

Im driving a 2000 hx, (d16y5) and it isnt the best motor...but i swapped onto the y8 head. I recently boosted it at 8 psi, its my daily, no problems whatsoever. good pull too..
as far as the y7, you can boost it if you want too..but your not going to see that big numbers. y8's are generally good motors to work with, but if you do choose to get the y7, find yourself a y8 head to slap on. Believe me, its worth the cash.

Yes it would up the compression, and obviously that would make it worse for boost than a lower compression motor. Honestly if you want a reliable turbo D series, just go buy the civic, and then buy either a ZC, y8, z6, or JDM D15B longblock and throw that in. You can get them all in the Vtec variety and they will be more reliable than a mini-me if your not that great of an engine builder. Plus you shouldnt have a problem finding one under $600.

i mini-me'd my y7 and felt a considerable difference when vtec kicked in as compared to without it. however now that im boosted i don't notice vtec at all. in my opinion don't bother with the mini-me now. save the money for a great sized turbo and better turbo parts. its worth it.

as mentioned above tuning is the key.

i do suggest swapping the y8 IM tho. its a MUCH better flowing manifold. and if you are set on a head, get the z6 head. flow and cam are great for boost. but you could save that money and put it towards some vitara's and TT's for a budget build and boost a lot more

my y7/y8 mini-me is sitting at 9.9 compression and has been daily driven and boosted for over a year now. no problems. and im not even tuned. ( just got all the tuning parts in to do it myself).

if your not comfortable tearing apart your motor, don't do any of this. it is all very doable but you have to have some know how.

for a link on the mini-me go to www.jdmuniverse.com and search mini-me. a friend of mine lillowek did a great writeup. i even used it back in the day when i did mine.

anything else post back im sure i'd be able to help
