we need more information on your car....you can check if you car is vtec by driving it.....Floor in and see if you feel a power change at about 3500 rpms....this works especially well in 1st gear....If you car is vtec but is only SOHC then if you want your car faster you might want to think about an engine swap...Because its almost not worth it to make mods to SOHC...If you car happens to be a DOHC then we can talk about turbos or even a little bit of N/A tuning it....You dont want to do any of this you can always throw some N20 in your car....Like a Zex or a NOS kit...

well wat moddle is your car, only ex have vtec in 97, and listen for it around i think its 5k rpms when it kicks in or 4k. but just to here it find a tunnel drive under it, drop it into lower gear so the rpms get up around 4k and see if you here it, prolly not because its hard to here on a sohc engine. and cheapest way to make ur car go fast is prolly a nice zex kit. or just save for turbo.

hello jono and welcome. this site is based in pennsylvania, usa i believe.

anyway, i just read ur "car" thing under ur name and u have an LXi. most of the ppl on this board are used to USDM (united states domestic market) civics, which is why there's not many that are familiar with non-USDM trims, such as CXi, LXi, VTi, etc.

i'll tell you that your LXi is a 1.6L sohc non-vtec. you can check the engine code stamped on the engine block to make sure, of course, although i believe you have a d16y7.

we'd love for you to stay at this site, but you might also want to frequent http://www.nzhondas.co.nz/ which is the new zealand hondas site, so u can find some local ppl to talk about sourcing parts, reputable shops, etc.

well i would ask you how fast do you want to go? if you just want stuff that is simple then for the HIE (headers, intake, exhaust) if you want to be a contenda i would say engine swap, cause it is hard and expensive to squeek a lot outta the d16s

i would recommend the opposite, d16s and their parts are much cheaper than b-series parts. i'd do a minime (y8 head on ur y7 block) to get vtec (build the engine while you've got it apart), and then boost it :P

looking from the front down on the mortor from above the vtec should Solenoid should be by the bottom left corner of the valve cover on a b series motor. here is a pic of a b18c gsr integra motor, i am very sure this is it i have it cirrcled in blue, if your valve cover is shaped like this your in good shape. the twin cam is much more powerfull. i know nothing other than japanise and american models. between countrys the engines should be pretty much the same.

ECOTEC is the DOHC 2.2 Cavalier motor that started in Cavaliers in 2002. Hint hint mine is a 95. Just a bit more powerful than the OHV inline 4 (2.2) that came from 95-97 and the 2200. It's not like vtec but the ECOTEC cams are very strong and if you build them right... very much powerful. I'm just waiting for my turbo. Turbo is like a mini vtec hehe

Well... to be honest with you, honda's with v-tec burn a little bit of oil when they go into V-Tec, so, you could always have it dyno'd and if it burns oil... then its probably V-tec. Another way is the computer. If you can find a wiring schematic for the computer in your car there should be a wire for V-Tec. Good luck finding out. And, consider a motor swap to a DOHC motor, no doubts there...
