Okay, here's the deal. Birthday's coming up, and with the job i'm getting, i'll have some green. I've been thinking about what would make the car faster w/o spending a hell of a lot. Here's what ive come down with:

SOHC 16-valve 1.6 liter head from a CRX or 6th gen civic

92-95 EX/Si manual tranny to replace my POS CX tranny

As far as VTEC heads go, i'm not a HUGE fan of VTEC, I see the benefits of it, but maybe later on I could swap a VTEC head in, since there would be other things to do, such as hook up the VTEC wires, put a new ECU in, etc, which I dont have time for right now. Anybody have any other suggestions for cheap performance gains?

youre not a huge fan of vtec? WTF? i dont get it :wtf: besides if yer limited on cash you can always get a j-spec zc motor and you'll smoke coupe SIs,youve got a cx ,thats the lightest of that year. its not hard to make that car go fast.plus the zc motor just drops in,all you need is a p-28 ecu a new o2 sensor and wire the vtec and yer set.

#1 don't take an engine out of a 6th gen because you have to worry about a wiring harness for obd1 - obd2. Get a D16Z6.

#2 dont take an engine out of a CRX because you can't convert obd0 - obd1. Again, go with a d16z6.

#3 you can buy a z6 for about 450 with tranny and if you have an extra 1500 you can turbo.

PS: do not, i repeat, do not swap in a non-vtec engine, there's no point. A VTEC engine is about an extra 100 dollars for about 20 hp.

like it was said before just get the d16z6 not only will you get vtec but also the tranny your looking for. all for the price you can do a complete mini-me swap for. if you can get the engine and tranny for around the price dirtyd said before.

the only reason not to get VTEC is if u r turboing a B-series(for compression purposes).

get the ZC like tony said... it comes in both SOHC and DOHC variants (and yes, it is a dohc d-series engine)

That's also a good idea if you're looking to spend a little more money. If you do have the money though go with anfrey's idea.

actually thats wrong, if you have a good tunner they can handle 10.xx:1 compression no problem. but if your tunner sucks then thats were you run into problems. higher compression lets you make more HP. the lower the compression ratio the bigger room for error there is.

Don't like vtec???? Clearly you've either A. never owned a honda with it, or B. never even driven in one with it. vtec is worth every penny... hell on a d series it's not expensive either. get it.

im not a huge fan of vtec either. but the sohc vtec motors are built far better than the non-vtec versions. if going with a sohc, get the best engine in the correct obd.
