Overheating d16y5

Got a 98 civic hx the other week and it was running good until I decided to race a scion xb on the highway (dog walked him) but when I was done in realized that my temp gauged was maxed out . Now when I drive it overheats after 5 mins but only when I am driving if I let it coast or idle it cools down really quick. I found out there was no thermostat in the car so I put a new one in but its still does the same thing . It has antifreeze. When its over heating the top rad hose is red hot but the bottom one is ice cold . I've had people tell me that they think my head gasket might have a small Crack and is losing pressure but I have no idea. Any thoughts.

Are you losing coolant, maybe burning it? Most the time if you have no thermostat these motors barely heat up so if it's overheating without one then you have a serious issue. Is the fan coming on? Radiator stay full without you topping it off all the time?

You can start the car with radiator cap off and check for bubbles coming up, smell inside the radiator for exhaust, look for oil in the radiator, look under oil cap for brown foam, all of these would help indicate a head gasket issue.

Is the water pump spinning...? If the lower radiator hose is 'ice cold' and the upper is 'red hot' I'm going to go with thermostat... Was it installed properly? (Not saying you don't know what you're doing, but...I even second guess myself sometime when installing parts like that...)
