I want to take off the intake manifold on my em1 cause its dirty as hell and I've been having some idling problems. Is it easy to do? Does anyone have a good guide on doing it?

I'm not sure removing and cleaning the IM will be needed to fix your idle problem. Can you describe the problem? High, low, or fluctuating idle problem? Any CEL codes? When did the problem start? Have you cleaned the IACV?

yea like ron said... most problems with idle dont mean the intake is dirty...

i mean yea it may be dirty.. but it should only hinder performance... and not idle... you could have a dirty IACV.. which is easy to clean...

you could have an airleak issue..... to check for leaks... start the car and let it idle..... then take carb cleaner... and spray around all the vaccum hoses.. and down where the intake meets the head... as well as around all the fuel injectors.. and then where the throttle body meets the intake...

if there is an airleak problem... spraying the area will cause the engine to suck in the carb cleaner.. and the car will do one of 2 things... stall... .or almost stall.

if you try and spray the throttle plate itself while the engine is running... it will stall on most cars... if you discover a leak... then you know whats wrong with the idle... and what to replace. no need to remove the intake manifold if there isnt a problem there... it would be a waste of time and waste of a gasket... becasue you need to replace the intake gasket when you do it.

I wanted to take the intake manifold off cause their is alot of dirt on the outside of it but I'm going to hold off on removing it. As for the idling problems I have 2 different kinds of problems.

First problem is soon as I come to a red light and when the car stops moving in neutral, the car will idle at 1500rpm for a 2-3 seconds and drop down to 1000rpm. This will happen almost everytime I go to a red light.

Second problem is after driving the car for about 15 minutes,I'lI come to a red light and the car's idle will go from 1500rpm to 1000 like in the first problem but after sitting at the light for a minute a check engine light will come on and RPMS will stick at 1500. When I give it gas the RPMs will bounce from 1500 to 1700 and I really have to give is gas to get it moving. When I shift from 1st to 2nd the car shakes really bad making driving impossible. Also to add on I've noticed that when this problem happens when the car is at idle with the check light on I've notice from the exhaust it sounds like its making puffing noises....a shitty sound description but I've noticed when it was cold out I could see puffs of exhaust coming out tail pipe.

I have my own simple car scanner so everytime the light turns on I delete the code P0505 and after that the car drives normal again at with 800rpm idle. I really want to get this problem fixed cause the summer is coming and I want to drive my car without this problem occurring. Also I have cleaned the IACV and the problem still existed.

O yea another problem is when I car is sitting still idling, i'll give it a little gas, the car revs up a little and dips down to 800rpm and goes to 1000rpm.
