I'd buy components and replace both, I did the same thing in my Civic.

of course they will be better, as long as you don't buy some ebay brand speakers. It's not like hondas come with bose systems.

www.hookedontronics.com has really good deals on component speakers. I would recommend some infinity reference or kappa components. If you go the route of aftermarket components however you are going to need to add an amp, it is pointless to put after market components in your car without an amp

There'sseldom anything wrong with getting speakers from Froogle or ebay. Sometimes you get a great deal sometimes you get junk, but a new $79.00 pair of MB Quarts beats the hell out of Infinty Kappas for $149.00. Caveat Emptor.

As for the original question, the OE tweeters come up a little short. With a little work you can securely fit a replacement in there that came with your component speakers anyway

If I just put in regular coaxial speakers in the doors, and run an amp to them with the oem tweeter still connected, would the extra power blow the oem tweeter? Or does it have like a factory cutoff?

It still has its own crossover, but it's not going to protect it from too much power. Stock stereo components weren't meant for aftermarket external amps.

I had 12" Pyles in my Swift!

I think the magnets on my Polk 6.5s are bigger than the 12s had.  :rolf:
