Rear speaker cover

Hello, guys,

Recently I was working on the rear speaker of my 95 civic. When I took off the top covers, I noticed that there was a pleather/foam backing on the inside of the covers.
Has anyone here seen this before? Does it have a purpose? Should I just remove it.
