Removing Hatch Trim Liner

I'm looking for help to replace the inner hatch trim panel on my '93 Si Hatch. I got the old one off but had to wedge the cup behind the hatch release lever through the panel to get it out. I could not get the release lever knob to come off no which would have made it effortless. Now the problem is I cannot get the cup through the new panel to reinstall it. Any hints would be much appreciated. Thanks,

Brian

Some Photos

Sorry about the double post, I won't make any excuses. Hopefully you will still look at the attached photos for some explanation. They are not showing up in the post preview so I hope they are there.
First photo shows the hatch with the trim panel removed. My finger is on the "cup" that sits behind the release lever which cannot be removed without getting the lever knob off (which I haven't been able to do). The other photo shows the trim panel above the hatch release. I'm trying to show how the "cup" flange is larger than the hole in the trim panel. Because of this I am unable to reinstall the trim panel since I can't seem to coax the cup back through the hole.
My objective is to get the release lever knob off so I can remove the cup, reinstall the trim panel and then reassemble the release lever bits. Thanks,

Brian

If you're not planning on re-using the cup, use a dremel cutting disc. Otherwise, not sure. Im from London by the way.
