Removing Smoke Smell from a Car

Anyone have any suggestions or advice on their experiences w/ smoked in cars and how to get rid of the smell? I'm hoping that by removing everything including all the seats and having them steam cleaned should help alot. If it doesnt get any better I would probably replace the carpeting and maybe even the seats. I also would probably change the a/c filters and have it hooked up to a machine to see if any of the tar residue could be removed. Any thoughts?

Baking soda works too, allthough I wouldnt want to spread it on your carpet or seats. Maybe put some under your seats on the carpet. Leave it for a few days and vacum it up

shampoo your seats carpet and headliner. but there is a way i saw that you keep some vinegar in a container in your car over night for a couple days and it takes out all smells

dont shampoo your headliner, headliner glue is water soluable, if you get it wet you headliner will start to sag.

when i said shampoo it idint mean soak it completely. i meant mist it with some all purpose cleaner and wipe it down with a damp cloth. ive done it in all of my cars reagualrly (smokin in your car not good) and never had a headliner sag or anything

before you shampoo man use a spray that is designed to remove smoke smell. Its works 99% of the time. My detail guys do it all the time.

I had a rental car i smoked in with the windows up and it smelled really smoky. I used this stuff...turned the car in next day....no idea it was smoked in.

telling you....just use a spray designed to get rid of smoke and spray it a lot and close your car up and let it sit a while

scrub your headliner with a/p and a lil bit of smelly good soap. that would be a start and steam clean your carpet

This is what I did when I baught a car from a previous smoker.
I used FOLEX (you can pick it up target or wherever) on all the cloth services, it's non toxic and works pretty well and it's only like $6 dollars. I sprayed the area really well and used an interior scrub brush (baught from wal-mart in the auto department) and scrubbed like crazy. Then, while the interior was still wet, I used the big vaccume at the car wash and vaccumed the interior. Then repeat (you may have to do this a couple times to really get the smell out, it took me about 2-3weeks to get it to where i liked it). But Folex is safe on most on cloth surfaces. Then after that, I cleaned the headliner with some vinyl cleaner (mine was not cloth). Then make sure to clean the interior windows REALLY WELL, they can hold a lot of smoke 'smell' in. Then make sure to clean all plastic surfaces with a plastic cleaner/protector. If the car still has an ash tray or a couple of ash trays, make sure to REALLY CLEAN THOSE ( i just through mine out). Then you want to spray some OZIUM inside the car (obviously with you outside the car) and close the doors and let it sit over night. These steps are what worked for me. I did all these steps at least 1-2X week for about 3-4 weeks and the car smelled great. be carefull of products that claim to 'get rid' of the smell and just end up covering them up for a day. I wasted a lot of pocket money on these type of products. You have to put a little elbow grease to get rid of the smell.

Short version:
Folex
Ozium
plastic cleaner
elbow grease
Air freshener

nice thanks man ^^^.

I plan on probably replacing the carpet w/ an oem replacement from stockinteriors.com. They look to be legit and other people on here have recommended them. The ebay ones are from what ive read really terrible sometimes so thats def. a no go. I'm also gonna rip out all the seats and deep clean them as you suggested. Then I'll put the new carpet back in. I'm also thinking about replacing the head liner since i know itll prolly hold alotta the smell. Anyone know where I can get one, or would u suggest just a salvage yard? Also, I'm gonna try to clean the plastics and have the a/c system serviced and see if i can find anyone that can treat the ducting to get rid of all the tar if possible. Any ideas on this?

^^^ A better idea is to not smoke in the car, better yet not smoke at all. Smoking in your car and hose in general always decreases the value of it.
