Roof Rack

Hey everyone,

I'm brand new to the forums (already posted in the Post Your Sedan thread) and I wanted to see if I could get some help!
I'm looking to get a roof rack on my 99 Civic Lx, but I don't want to spend hundreds upon hundreds for Yakima or Thule or anything. Any suggestions on how to cheaply mount a good looking roof rack on a naked roof?

Thanks!

With that type of budget you have to get very resourceful and creative. What do you plan to carry on it?

I agree 100%. But I don't mind getting a little haggard with it. If I carry anything, it would be skis/snowboards. But it's more for looks than anything.

For looks? Huh. Each to their own i guess. I put a yakima setup on my 7th gen. Spent a long time on kijiji and got 3 bike attachments, the roof rack and a big box for up there for $500ish and i think that was a great deal. Worth over $2200 new.
Are you planning to use it for a box as well or just skis and snowboards. Mine is loud (wind noise) and i would never leave it on if i wasnt using it.

Yeah, I guess I've always thought roof racks just look good. No box. Just the rack, and maybe a wind fairing later on.

Well, a quick search and I found this rack on Amazon for $89.88. I also saw a few universal mounting kits ranging around $40. You'll just need to get creative with how your bolt them to the roof, but all that should put you under
$150 so long as you do all the work yourself, which could include removing a lot of the interior in order to remove the head liner to mount solid bracing points for the brackets. These are the types of things you need to consider with that low of a budget unless you luck out by finding used equipment dirt cheap.

Oh, roof racks just bolt onto your car? I just assumed it was the clamp on style like the 7th gens. Sorry.

They could clamp on with the vehicle-specific set-up, but he doesn't want to spend the money to do it properly.

Thanks for finding that! That's a solid find! That will definitely be my fall back if I can't find a used vehicle specific one on good ole' Craigslist or anything.

You'll need to be very diligent and have luck to just find a specific kit, let alone at a reasonable price. They're extremely uncommon for 6th gen.'s.
