Rough Idle in 1st and 2nd gear

I just bought a 1999 Honda civic SI however after the first day of owning it I noticed when I would take off in 1st and 2nd gear at low RPM it would jerk really bad (felt like I was taking off in wrong gear) So I did some research on the net and I unplugged the vtec solenoid and now it doesn't do it anymore. So before I spend $130 on a new one can I be certain that's my problem or should I check other things first?

take the solenoid off and replace the gasket and screen and clean the inside of the solenoid and go from there its not a common thing for the solenoid itself to be bad but does happen.
