sup guys,
newbie here, burn me all you want. Um...got a question, having a small engine and installin' them cheap aftermarket "fart cans" gives it a really high pitch annoying sound right?? Well i just installed a tanabe hyper medallion universal muffler and it sounded just like my old aftermarket fart cans. What's the deal here?? Is it because of my 1.5 d15b7 engine??

After a few days i went back to the shop and bought/installed a bigger resonator (bigger than stock) for my car and the sound, quiet down a bit.

My friend who have a 2000 SI intalled a full cat back 5zigen fireball exhaust system sounded much quieter than mine (tanabe+bigger resonator). And you know the 5zigen is a straight thru muffler unlike my oval tanabe hyper. So oval should be quieter than straight through.

My conclusion?? Must be the engine...his is a b16a2 and mine is a mere d15b7

What you guys think??

i noticed most hondas have the high pitched muffler sound, like you say probably just the engine. A friend of mine has a 5 inch universal can on his stock sohc, at revs higher than 3500-4000 it sounds like a beast, it has a real deep sound to it. The only problem is that at once the revs drop it makes that gay 'raspy' sound.

on my 91 dx hatch (before trading for this 96) all i had were white neons (dont flame me) and a 4-1/2" muffler. the muffler had a nice deeeep tone that wasnt very loud.

1 - wont get pulled over for noise violation (deep instead of loud & annoying)

2 - looked good (big, 4-1/2" and shiny)

3 - came out on right side tho instead of stock left (muffler guy did that)

4 - came out to be 82.?? with shipping and everything from http://www.slickcar.com/productdetails.asp?ProductID=2858

5 - also had my stock cat so that helped me not have a loud annoyin sound

I bought a 94 cx hatch just recently that i am starting to work on, i think it has a d15b8 engine (70hp) and it came with a full catback magnaflow exhaust, and it sounded no different then if it had stock exhaust.

I bought a tanabe racing medellion look alike on ebay and it's not that loud. Peoples been telling me it's actually low compared to others. The sound is also a low sound through the rpms. When I hit 4-5k it starts to get louder but still remains low.

I silenced mine.. cause too much noise just accelerating
to the damn speed limit. Anyways.. it didnt have a high
pitch sound at all.. but neither did it have a flow master
exhaust rumble. It was in between. More deep then whiny.

All honda's have a high pitched annoying exhaust sound. (no offense, just my opinion)

To me, a v8 has a deep exhaust tone, not a honda. Some honda's will have a deeper tone than most, but it is still high pitched, comparatively. Nothing can compare to the rumble from a big v8 with a choppy cam.

I have 2 funky systems. In my 4dr with the D15B7 engine, it has a DNX chrome header, high flow cat. and 2 3/8 piping from DNX, with Greddy muffler from an Accord. All chrome pipes too. Not so loud but deep. I guess because of the Accord size muffler. The other system is in my CX hatch with a D16Z6/Y8 motor, it has a DC sport header, high flow cat., a dual res. pipe from an Accord then a 2 1/2 bend to a 40 series Delta flow Flowmaster 2 1/2 in and (2) 2 1/4 out. I know i know, why a Flowmaster. My friend at the exhaust shop didn't have any after market chrome mufflers that would fit. because of the short length from the axle to the bumper. This system is very deep. People think I have a turbocharger in my car because of how it sound. Plus the dual tips looks cool. I got the Accord stuff from a friend who got rear ended and the "s" pipe got bent. So he sold the system to me and I used the res. the muffler and the flanges.

i agree with you completely, but there are some things you can do to get rid of the "nasty ness" and get it sounding better, alot of after market exhaust lack a resonator which will really help get ride of that signature "ricer" sound.

and turbozinc, ever heard a 225whp honda motor rip threw the rpms??? now that is a sound to be reconed with if you ask me.
