that;s what the keyway is designed to do. if it wouldn't have broken off there something more expensive down the line would have been damanged.

That so? IDK why it broke just snapped though it seems that the gear circled the cam a couple times afterwards due to the scratches we replaced it with a new oem honda gear and the car started right up. No chatter or misfiring and she's been driving it for a week so at least theres that. Glad we didn't bend any valves
