I may be wrong, but it seems that my VTEC is not engaging. i have a d16y8vtec and doesnt it engage at around 5500 rpms? I dont seem to notice any difference... could it be my ecu has disengaged it due to other problems?

close the windows and turn the radio off... accelerate in 2nd and 3rd and listen real carefully, the engine tone should change and if you have an intake you'll hear air getting sucked in. also is your check engine light on? make sure your car is warmed up enough. check the oil level also.

Check your oil level, vtec is also oil preasure sensitive, if you dont have enough oil, you dont get vtec, happened to me once, was about half a quart low, scared the s**t out of me, thought i busted something. Started callin friends, one said to check the oil, i put half a quart in, and there it was.

when the vtec engages, it should sound like a grinding sound. it can be hard to hear, so do as everyone else has said and just keep the cabin quiet

on a stock sohc, vtec is not really noticeable. the only way you can tell if vtec is not working is when you go pass your vtec crossover point and make it go up to redline, if you dont feel your car pulling then something is wrong and vtec is not engaging. if your at 6k rpm and you feel power droping then, most likely vtec is not engaging.
