Speaker Installation

Hey guys. The stock speakers in my 94 civic are starting to go. I was wondering if anyone could provide a walkthrough as to how to install new speakers. I think the size of them is 6 and a half inches. If anyone could confirm this it would be great. I'm looking for speakers with a better bass response than the stock ones as well. If you guys have any suggestions for speakers too, that would be great. I'm looking to keep them around 50 bucks a pair. Thanks! =)

first off, front or back, and is it a 2dr hatch or sedan? it should be 6 1/2 in the front, and same in the rear.
it's super easy regardless of placement. take off the plastic cover, in the front their a little harder to take off, but don't worry, it shouldn't break. I usually get a flat head screw driver and start at the back and pop it off. than it's like 3 or 4 screws. and with honda's they have a special clip that the wires run into, and than clip onto the speaker. you'll just have to cut those, than pull back the outside coating back an inch, your new speakers should come with new wires about 6" inches long. than you can just wrap those wires together and plug them right into the new speaker. I would say for 50 a pair, just go with some sony's. they've never done me wrong. and if the speaker doesn't get any sound out of it, that means you got the wires backwards. it really is easy, no need to pay a shop 65 bucks for them to take out 4 screws and put the new ones in.
good luck.
if you need more help, I can post some pictures for you. although since I already took off the stock clips, I won't be able to help you with that, but that's just as easy as cutting the wires.

I recommend Pioneer 6.5 2-ways for the front.

My hatch came with the rear installed by the previous owner, which is 6x9. If you have rear speakers, I recommend 3-ways.

speaker preference and quality just depends on how much you want to spend-you can also get tweater upgrade if you have them but also your deck desides how well the speakers will sound*

Ah, sorry guys - I should have specified. It's a 1994 Civic Coupe EX. Non hatchback. I checked out the front speakers and was able to remove the plastic panel, but I was not able to remove the speaker because of the inside door panel. I'm really hoping I don't have to remove the door panel. J_Uhrig87, could you be a bit more specific? I know that the front speakers have to be shallow mount speakers due to the limited space. I saw that the speakers have a special clip, but could you elaborate on the wiring too? I'd really appreciate it. If you could post pictures that would be great too. And one more thing, what's a 2 way or a 3 way speaker? Thanks guys. =)

2 way and 3 way mean how many voice coils the speaker has. in the front you can only fit a 2 way unless you want to shell out some more cash to get thinner three ways. pioneer is good too. I used to have those in my old saturn back in the day, sound nice. get a set of 2 ways in the front. the wires that come from the stereo are going into a plastic gray box thing that clips onto the speaker. aftermarket speakers don't have this application as it's a stock honda thing. so you'll have to cut it off by simply cutting the wire close to the clip. than get some wire cutters and cut back the coating on the outside of the wire. the new speakers will come with 6 inches of new wires with a metal sleeve that goes over a metal piece on the back/side on the speaker theres two.. you can wrap the wires together(the bare wire under the coating) and it'll plug in. theres a small plug and a big one, make sure you match them up on the speaker. with the door panels, you might have to try and pull them out at an angle. mine, the top of the speaker was covered by the door panel. so you have to pull the bottom out and down to get it out.
hope that helps. I'll steal the wife's camera and take some pics tomorrow.
let me know if you need any more help

There's 3 screws around the door panel, take them out, and pull the panel off the door and you should have full access to the speaker mount and wiring.

it's a 5th gen though, he doesn't have to, you jsut have to take them out at an angle. it's really not difficult. took me 20 minutes the first time I put speakers in. and I mixed the wires up. best idea is to do one speaker, turn your car on, check the speaker, if you got it right, move to the next one. much easier than doing both and they don't work, than you have to pull the panel off again.

i like component speakers. ive got $400 in the speakers alone and another $200 for the amp for them. (can you see why most people dont get components) ive got infinitys in the front and polks in the rear. the reason i go with components is i love sound. they are so clean aand still have some thump to um. of course the 1200w 12" audiobahn sub helps too. lol the only pain was trying to find a place to put the crossover. i ended up putting them at the bottom of the door (just enough room to clear the windows). i had to stick them in ballons and ductape the hell out of them because my doors leak but it works and sounds awsome. come to think of it, it was a pain in the ass to run new wires through the door to the amp under the seat as well. why couldnt honda make that stupid rubber tunnel thing straight.

Wait so you can't use a 4 way speaker for the front?
