My speedometer for my 1995 honda civic has started to malfunction. I searched everywhere to figure out why and came up with that the cluster or the VSS might be the issue. When the speedometer malfunctions it doesnt register the odometer but if i hold down the reset button for the short trip indicator the speedometer pops back to life if i hold it down long enough. So i dont know whether the vss or the cluster might be a issue. :???:

Try getting a VSS from a junkyard. They're very easy to replace. I had to replace mine on my fifth gen because the speedo didn't work. However, it could be your cluster considering how you can somehow fix it for a little bit. I would try replacing the VSS first as it really doesn't hurt to change it. Just get a good one and get try to get one for a 1995 but anyone from 92-95 should work. I used a '95 VSS on my '92 Civic.

I had the same problems and what I finally found out was the problem was that the gear that the speedo sensor runs on was just spinning....Like it came disconnected from what it connects to in the transmission.....Sucks because I spent $130 for a new speed sensor, dropped the cluster a couple times to check all connection with that just to find out the prob. is in the transmission.....

vss

the vss for this car is a cheap and easy thing to change. a new one from autozone is around $20 and take about 10 minutes to change. i have a 95 ex and have the same problem, changed the vss twice and the speedo still doesnt work. i have to change out the cluster.
