starting problems: relay click only

i still have problems with my lovely civic ´92:

i put the key in the run position, but then i hear the main relay click only. i try it again and again, then it works (until now...). this phenomenon is from time to time only, not at every startup.

i replaced the starter... but without an effect .

any ideas?

The key has OFF, ON(I)/ACC, ON(II)/run, and ON(III)/start. Which key position are you talking about? In ON(III), does the starter crank the engine?

I have the same issue. It doesn't crank when I turn the key to ON/START but the relay clicks though.

You mean the starter solenoid clicks? If so, check whether the large black starter wire has voltage. If so, the starter is probably toast. If you whack the starter with a rubber mallet, does it crank?

It does crank when I give it a bit of a whack with a 2x4 that I carry in my trunk. So I DID think it was the starter is going soon...

It's a pretty sure bet that the starter is on its last leg.

In ON(III), there is NO crank, i hear the relay "click" only, nothing else.

Next time, i turn it on (III), the starter crank and start the engine...without regularity

Is the click you hear the starter solenoid or the main relay?

Test the ignition switch:
