Stereo on, but no sound????

A few days ago, my stereo just stopped producing sound. It's on and working, but no sound is heard. If I turn it off a few times and back on, the sound comes back, but it goes away after a few seconds. Sometimes, I can get the music playing for about a minute, but after that, the sound just goes away out of nowhere. I can see that it's reading a cd or that it is on a radio station, but no sound is heard. I checked the fuses on the stereo, but they're fine. Any ideas? I have a Clarion VRX935 VD. It's the monitor type.

loose wiring maybe? sounds like you just need to take it out and look at everything and see if it's all in check... if it is then it's prally something internal in the cd player, wish i could help ya more but electronics are way above my head...

loose speaker wire, or loose ground. May even be a wire is making contact with something it shouldn't. Check where your speakers first. Do you have aftermarket speakers? Do you have an aftermarket deck?

I have aftermarket speakers. There is no sound coming out of the speakers at all. I'll check the wiring at the brain of the unit.

Do you think there is something wrong with the unit, itself or just the wiring? I've had it for about 4 years.

I'd say the wiring. Check the wires in your door and rear deck. If one wire is touching the other, or metal on the door, it won't work.

I didn't see anything loose. I just turned my car on again while parked and music played and out of nowhere, it just stopped again after 30 seconds. It never turns back on, but if you power it off a few times, it turns on again and music goes away after a few seconds. What the heck is going on? If there was a loose connection, it wouldn't be playing at all when the car isn't moving. I think it's the unit. It's very frustrating.

ok this should be easy since i use to install radios for a living this is what i need to know?
1. do you have external components hooked to this (ex. amps)
2. is the unit getting hot when you touch it after it has cut off
3. you stated that when it comes on it plays for a while, now does the power cut off or does the power stay on

here can be some possible answers
1. if you have amps connected to the deck the remote wire could possibly stop producing power which will in turn turn off your amps
2. if the unit is getting hot it will cause the unit to trip the protector relay in the deck and stop playing until it cools down or as you say turn it on and off a few times
3. if it cuts out and you still have power to the deck and the unit is not really hot then the internal amp that supplies the power to the speakers could be going bad and the only way to fix it is to bring it in to a shop

1) I do NOT have any amps hooked up to the unit. I do have a playstation 1 and another deck (cassette) hooked up to the brain. The cassette deck is usually off though.
2) Hmmmmm, I think it is getting hot when it cuts off, but isn't that normal? The brain is hidden under the carpet. I never had a problem with that until now. I've had the unit in my car for about 4 years.
3) The power does not cut off; it stays on and continues to play, but no sound. The screen is still lit up and you can see that it's still playing a cd because the time remaining still counts down.

#3 is what it sounds like to me considering the age of the deck (4yrs).............All mosfet decks get warm and some get kinda hot depending on the conditions inside the car thats normal. I think maybe something inside the deck might be coming lose. Metal changes shape when it gets hot so when the deck gets warmed up somethin could be losing connection....Did u check the wires of the cassette played u said u have got wired to it?

4 years is not that old for a radio the radio in my car is 8 years old lol and still works like it is brand new, the brain is under the carpet????? wow that is a restriction to allow that thing to breath, try relocating the unit from under the carpet and see if that helps, radios are just like computers if you put them in a confined space with no way to breath the heat will take its toll on it, and yes it will be warm to the touch but not hot to the point that you can't touch it, if it is hot to the point that you can't touch it then there is something wrong with the brain

I had the same problem the topic poster is having, like I said. It was a speaker wire touching the doors sheet metal.

But, I've had it under the carpet for four years. I never had a problem in that time until now. I will try to expose the brain and turn the radio on to give it some ventilation. If it doesn't turn off than it is an overheating problem. I'll let you know what happens.

i am suprised that didn't blow a fuse that is creating a direct short and would cause more amps to be pulled through the radio, be glad i have seen radios fry cause of this, i had seen you post this earlier but when i read all the posts i think he stated that he checked the wires and they were ok so i dunno

If the deck is turining off its output its probably going into protect, especially if you have a monitor with a brain box. Its either going to be the wiring, which has been checked. Or you have a blown speaker.

Take your seat out and get to the brain box.
Now one by one disconnect your positive speakers wires.
Check them one at a time and reconnect the positive. When the deck stays on you have found your troubled speaker.

Even though its not everyday practice to mount the brain box under the carpet it should be fine. I would have put it on top of the carpet for the airflow but its no biggie.

I took it to the shop that installed it for me and they checked everything (wires, speakers, etc.). They told me that it's most likely the brain causing the problem so they took it out and shipped it over to Clarion. I hope they're right.
