Sticky Gas Pedal Help

Hey, I have a 1997 Civic Hatchback with an automatic tranny, and it has a sticky pedal. None of the similar threads describe my specific problem. Basically the pedal doesn't move smoothly. It moves in increments. When I accelerate from a stop, the car accelerates hard every time, and when I'm driving, it doesn't really allow for fine tuning of my engine rpm's or speed.

I looked under the dashboard and under the hood, and I narrowed it down to either a dirty throttle cable, or the little spring connected to the pedal to return it back to a neutral position. Can somebody give me some advice on how to fix this?

Clean the throttle body thoroughly. If you get no joy, then replace the throttle cable.

I think the throttle body is the thing that's connected to the cable and spins when you press the accelerator. It spins freely when I move it with my hand. It looks dirty, but it seems to work fine.

It's dirty. Clean the TB, and go from there.
