Stupid Question Help...

This maybe a stupid question but I don't understand it. You can get pistons and rods for change your compression to either be higher or lower..... if your going all motor you want a high compression which will make more horse power.... and if your going turbo you make your compression lower...... but sense your making your compression lower won't this make you have a lot less horse power and actually slow down your car? If so why do people do the internals before putting a turbo in....? why would you want a slower car?

i would answer this question, but 1. you wont understand it because you dont understand basic engine theory, let alone compression theory, and 2. even if i did answer it you would ask almost the same question, just reworded 2 days later and then piss your panties because i dont answer it again. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/ go there, read up on everything, then ask if you dont understand. i know you arent going to read anyway, but oh well, i tried.

i only be an ass to you because you ask questions that, even when they are answered, you either dont read the answer or you dont know enough to comprehend the answer, and then think were being ass holes for getting mad. there is a lot of physics and chemestry when it comes to discussing engine theory, and unless you get that s**t theres only so much we can dumb down before we arent telling you anything anymore.

Oversimplified, but here's the basic idea. Boosting a car puts more air into your cylinders. More air=more power. More fuel is needed to keep the a/f ratio though. But more air is harder to compress. There is a limit to how high you can boost with stock compression before you do damage. To boost more, you need to lower compression. Again, this is just a basic, oversimplified (and thus not 100%) answer.

im not being an ass. unless you understand the physics of motion, the ideal gas law, and engine theory, he literally will not be able to comprhend the answer that i could give him. the simplest answer i can give is lower compression is easier to tune. but that means nothing on the grand scheme of things. its easier to tune, but, it will take more boost to reach the same amount of hp, and more boost is harder to tune. thats the simpliest i can make it.

LOL well handlebars... i did read up on that site you gave me... thanks it was very helpful... i learned all about the engine and all about the internals... so pretty much somebody please correct me if i am wrong when you redo the internals not only are you dumping alot of money into your car you are making it slower... but on the other hand sence the compression is lowered and you replaced the pistons, rods, sleeves, and whatever else your internals are much stronger to hold up on the power of the boost from the turbo... so pretty much running low boost on stock compression is more dangerous then running a little bit higher boost to make up for the lowered compression... i understand that... HOWEVER... my question is do people do the internals before they throw on the turbo or after??/ because if they do it before won't the car be slower but better quality?

they do it whenever they have the money. it's relatively safe to run low amounts of boost on stock internals, but if u want to be pushing more, there's more wear and tear on the engine, which is why better parts are put in. you don't always have to lower your compression.

Today's word is: Detonation.

If your compression level is too high, the fuel air mixture will ignite before the optimum time causing a lot of internal damage.(compression = heat = combustion...this is how diesels work) You can run higher compression levels with a turbo charger but you will have to run higher levels of octane in your fuel. Of course there's a lot more to it than that but that's the basic idea.

to an extent, yes you are correct. lower compression means less hp is extracted from a given intake charge. this is not done on an n/a car. the engine is either built up and immediately turboed, or turboed on stock internals, and then later built up and more boost pushed into it.

okay thank you... so from what i hear i'm guessing 6 psi would be a safe boost on stock internals on the b18c1 for a daily driver or could you even go lower?? i am VERY MUCH ON THE SAFE SIDE... don't want any detonation problems? and also i heard to redo the internals it is close to 5g's is this correct?

building the motor isnt cheap. how built is built depends on your hp goals and your wallet. you could easily spend 3 tiems that on a build. you can run 8 psi on a good tune safely, and thats good for about 300 whp on a t3/4 tubo on a b18c. keep it below 6 if you are running any other type of fuel management other th an a standalone ecu. 8-9 psi is about the limit you can push safely and reliably on pump gas.
