Ok well i feel i might get flammed for asking this question, but i am going to start building up on my car audio, and was wondernig how many subs? Orginally i was thinking 1 10" Sub. Then everyone has told me go with 1 12" or 2 10". I drive a coupe if it matters, and i need a good amount of trunk space (I play baseball, and i like to throw my bags in the trunk, but i can always use the back seat, but i need room for my baseball bag). Was just curious what you guys think the best alternative / solution is to this problem?

I have a sedan and I put 2-10's in the back and I have plenty of trunk room. I dont think theres that much difference , if any, btw trunk space in the two. Im also sellin my system if youre interested.

I have 1 Polk Momo 10" in a sealed enclosure. It hits loud enough for me and the sound quality is good.

I did have 4 8's in a 6th order bandpass enclosure. I had no trunk. Sure I could out bass a lot of systems but at that level sound quality took a dive.

i've had almost any speaker combo you can name, from single 8" sub to 2 12" subs and 3 18" subs in an 89 civic hatchback
and nearly every combo inbetween.... currently i have installed a single 10" sub in both mine and my gf's car, within a month we'll be both going to 2 10" subs... i say 2 10" subs is the best bet if they are good quality.
you can tune it to be clear and just fill in the tunes nicely, or tuned to set off car alarms while you drive through parking lots.
a 10" sub is capable of better sound quality than a 12" sub.

I have 2 10" Alpines, sound good but sometimes can be too loud. I had a 12" but I like the 10"s better.

two 10's would be nice, but if you get a nice 12w6V2 JL Audio sub, HO box, and JL 250/1 that will sound better and louder than most. My buddy has that in his EP3 and alot people cant believe its just one 12 they expect 3... Once I get everything else off my list its custom sealed fiberglass box with 2 10' JL W7's baby!

yeah, i'm going to be using 2 JLw3 dvc 10" subs and my gf will be using soundstream 10" dvc subs.
jl will pound harder, but imo the soundstream has better quality sound

damn near anything in a sealed box will allow you trunk space, so get what sounds good to you.

depends what you listen too. 10's i think sound better with rock music.. 12's sound better for rap and hip hop.. IMO. i think 12's are perfect. because you are between a 10 inch sub and a 15 inch. sealed is just the way to go depending if you want sq . if you want spl then ported... and remember build the box to spec first then for show.

In my non-civic, I run a single 2ohm round 10" Kicker Solobaric, powered by a 367 watt Kicker DX350. Enough bass for me, and the trunk is mostly useable.

Past setups... (using a Soundstream Reference 300 bridged mono)

two 4ohm 10" Solobarics (good, but hated losing trunk space)
single 4ohm 10" Solobaric (since it was 4ohm, it was not getting much power)
single 4ohm 10" Solobaric with single 4ohm 12" Solobaric (just an experiment, good, but still lost trunk space)
single DVC Cerwin Vega 15" (hit like a MOFO in my buddie's Trans Am, in my car *YAWN*)

What he said.
Most of them time, 2 10s will sound better than 1 12 though.
BUT It really depends on what you are getting too. A good 12 inch higher end sub like JL Audio, Orion or Infinity will definitely sound better than 2 lousy 10 inch subs..

You need to figure out what kind of setup you want whether you are looking for SQ or SPL.

It used to be that way with rock music better on 10s and rap on bigger speakers but nowadays good companies like Kove Audio engineer the speakers so they all sound good with all music. I would recommend a Kove KLD if you don't want something that takes up too much space or hits too hard. Also, I would always recommend a vented enclosure designed in WinISD. The box design is different for every sub because every sub has different Thiele Small parameters. Obtain these parameters from the sub manufacturer you choose and plug them into WinISD to plot your response. Then just design a box for your trunk based on the results the program brings up..... BTW you can probably download it if you type "winisd" into google.

Oh sorry for the double reply but i also wanted to add for those of you who dont know its approximately a 6 dB increase when you add additional similar subs assuming the volume, port area, and power are constant. Just to give you an idea 10 dB is effectively doubling the loudness to the human ear.
