Test Pipe/Racing Cat vs. Exhaust system??

I'm about to make my first modification to my 95 Civic. I was thinking about putting on a Apexi N1 style muffler, and a racing catalytic converter (since i would like a loud exhaust system)... This is also because i'm on a budget and cant really afford a whole exhaust system... Has anyone taken this route instead of a catback? if so, will gas mileage change due to the new cat? Posts of experiences will be appreciated

I plan on keeping all my stock exhaust piping, except for the test pipe/racing cat. And of course the universal muffler... Thats the only modification that I'm thinking about, as far as the exhaust. I heard the gas mileage might change. And I heard it will be a louder... but with the resonator still on, exactly how loud can it get?

i would do custom 3-inch piping....better flow...much louder....i dont think it will really affect you mileage....

Without a massive intake and good headers, the Apexi style exhaust(crap), and racing cat(waste o' money), would just make your car SLOW as hell, and yes, loud----LOUDIE FRIKIN DAH!!
So if you want slow and loud just hollow out your stock cat or take it off, and get that Folgers exhaust---I mean Apexi "style" exhaust.
And im pretty sure, someone correct me if im wrong, but a test pipe comes straight out your engine, under your car, and usually out the side---no cat, no exhaust, no street legal!!!! Good luck splanin that to the cops.
My opinion----Just save and get a good cat back exhaust sys.

Test pipe is a replacement for the cat. It's a straig pipe, no internals... just a damn pipe. It lowers resistance for the air flow (obviously).

But remember that an exhaust system is only as good as it's weakest link. No point in puting on a 3" racing-cat, if your piping is 1" wide. You can't push enough air into the cat to really make a big difference.

If you are all holy and want to stay legal, buy a race-cat and a catback system. It's better with a cheap cat-back, than an expensive muffler. An expensive muffler is like putting on a SiR badge on your 1.3 civic; it won't affect performance didly squat.

If you consider yourself an outlaw, a rebel, or just want some extra performance on the cost of mother nature, put on a test-pipe + cat-back. An exhaust manifold is expensive, but it's worth it when you get the money.

I suggest you do this, if you want performance, looks and sound:
- Put in a catback
- Put in a testpipe/race-cat
- Put in a air-intake
- Put in an exhaust manifold

That should keep you going for a while...

I have a straight pipe exhaust and i haven't been pulled over yet...maybe that's bc there are so many straight-piped dual exhaust jacked up redneck trucks around. lal

Most cops have wouldn't have the time, or take the effort, to check out if you have a testpipe or not. That is if you can even find a cop that knows what a testpipe is (and that it is illegal for road-use). I have never heard anyone being pulled over for having one, and never heard of anyone getting any fines because of it.

I don't know how it is in the US, but over here in Ireland you have to bring your car to a NCT (National Car Test) every 2 years to test out the entire car, including CO levels and such. This is where you might get a smack if you are using a testpipe. However, if you use a bolt-on test-pipe (not welded) it's just a matter of replacing the test-pipe with your old cat before you go for your NCT. No problem there.

if you want loud get a cheap muffler and 3inch piping total cost round 300. you want something good save up and get the whole catback from APexi if thats what you want. Also i would say i like a high flo cat over a test pipe.

from what i have heard, you would never ever ever ever want to put 3 inch piping on your civic unless you have a turbo the size of a marry go round that kids can actually ride on. on a 1.6 litre engine it is ideal to stick with 2.25 inch, a 1.8 you can go up to 2.5, but if you look at alot of dyno results, especially with newer cars, making a more efficient exhaust is not necessarily just freeing up the air ways because many cars now need an exhaust system that has some amount of back pressure. Even on a 5.9 (360) dodge v8 if you put too much flow on the exhaust you lose ALOT of low end. i know a guy with a dakota 5.9 r/t with true dual all the way back and his truck feels slower than a stock r/t with a single pipe non mandrel bent clunky piece of oem shiot.
