Think I may have blown a fuse?

I installed a new deck in my car today and on the way to school the power would come on and off on the stereo over every bump. Turns out the plug on the back of the stereo wasn't plugged in all the way. but while I was in the school parking lot I took the stereo out and started moving some of the wires while the cars ignition was in the on position and the gauge lights went out. Had to drive home w/o them in the dark lol pictured here

Some of the wires that weren't used in the radio like the dimmer wire were exposed. I think this accounted for the lights going out. Blown fuse or should I buy new lights for the gauge? This was such a newb mistake. I should have taken the negative wire off the battery first

To be honest, I never take the negative wire off the battery. I have been installing for 15 years though as a hobby and have done it all. I am just lazy, but extra careful now.

To answer your question, I am betting that it is a fuse. That is exactly what they are there for. They blow before something more important does, or worse, a fire starts.because of melted wire.

Don't beat yourself up about it too much. We have all been there. At least I have.

Now you just learn from your mistakes. Make sure you have ALL the extra wires covered and out of the way. Just because you don't use it on your exact application, doesn't mean they can't do harm.

Thanks guys, I was getting kind of worried reading other peoples experience with this problem. I dont have a volt meter or anything to check the fuse, but hopefully replacing it will do the trick

Well, what are you doing on here still? Get a flashlight, a fuse, and go check. Takes 10 seconds.

Like RonJ's sig says. Don't guess, Troubleshoot. Fuse is the first place you should check.

lol Thats what I was just doing but all I could do is look at it since I dont have another fuse to replace it with at the moment. Its pretty late, unless walmart sales these fuses, ill have to wait till tomorrow morning to go get new ones.

Good news, new fuse fixed it. I didn't know checking the fuse meant see if it's connection inside is "blown" lol learn something new everyday lol thanks
