timing belt question

I just bought a 98 Civic LX from my wife's great aunt. The car has 36k miles. It was driven regularly, though obviously not very far. She did have the oil changed every three months for the past 16 years.
After a few days of normal driving, I'm hearing a squealing from one of the pulleys, I think.

Is there a chance that the timing belt or tensioner has gone bad even though the mileage is so low?

Buy an automotive stethoscope and find out exactly where the noise is coming from before jumping to conclusions.

check the A/C take up pullley. mine was doing the same type of noise and repalcing it fixed it.. if not, remove the belts one by one, and run your engine after removing each belt. if noise still remains after removing all belts, then worry about doing the timng belt.

A stethoscope will eliminate all the unneeded belt removing and point exactly to what is making the noise. They are cheap from places like harbor freight. Every mechanic should have one in their tool box.
