Trick for exhaust gasket?

Hello

I have a 98 civic lx. It has the 3 way converter which I
Am changing. It came with this ring like gasket that I think
Goes in between the cat and the first pipe.
The problem is that I can't see where the ring fits.
The bottom of the cat is flat and the ring is too big
To fit in the groove of the pipe.
Is that gasket supposed to be ring shaped?
No gasket came off when I took the cat off

Are you referring to something like this?:

The wider end is supposed to go on the end of the header with the narrower end pointed into the cat.

No it's a thin flat ring. Not at all conical

I think that one should go after the cat, to the mid-pipe.

The catalytic converter is completely separate on it's own.
