Tried to check the cel

Me and my step dad tried to check the engine light.we removed the kick panel on the driver side located the green plus thing it had a brown and grey plug coming out of it the brown one was the small one so we unhook it and put a paper clip on it and turn the key to on and it didn't do anything.i have a 92 civic hatchback cx was wondering why it didn't work.and also I have reset the ecu and the light still on and it's tuning funny and it's back firing please help

Did you actually jump the two pins on the green connection?

Should be a green connection with blue wire. That's what my 95 had.
