Turbo B18 or B16?

Ok so I am going to probably buy that book that was mentioned in the thread before about Turbo set-ups.

I am going to go on a limb however and assume that it probably doesn't go into detail about the pros/cons of a B18 vs. a B16. In the 4G section there is a comparison about running an LS B18 vs JDM B16 with V-TEC. I've always heard that a non-vtec motor is seemingly easier to tune than a vtec one because of a few problems that I am not going to even try to mention due to my ignorance. However in the case I want to run a mild turbo set-up on my 6G, would B16 run better because of it's design or the B18? Granted you can pick up an LS motor way cheaper than B16 but is the extra money worth it, and then also what about the V-TEC issue....is it really harder to tune?

i would go b16. better trans and better head

down the road you can pick up a 1.8 block for $300 if you decide to build

I have yet to find a B16 head that is non-vtec though. Is that a problem with turbo tuning? Or is the problem simply fixed by not connecting the solenoid?

Thats because all b16's are vtec. So you probably won't find one. VTEC heads are marginally harder to tune than non-vtec, but any experienced tuner won't have a problem at all with it. If you want to get rid of vtec, I'd suggest vtec-killer cams instead of just unplugging the solenoid...that will just give you a CEL and might mess with you ecu a bit.

But as for the original questions, B16's love boost, but so do LS's. The LS will certainly give more torque, and just because the LS is so much cheaper, you could use the money you saved on buying that versus the b16 on better quality turbo parts and a b16 or gsr tranny. Thats my .02

i love my b16 turbo. youll get more torque with the b18 tho. either one is a good platform to build

but for a turbo to work better is torque not needed no? im had a b16a2 head and a b18c4 bottom end and was wanting to go boost. now what do you guys think about this? Would it have been better going for an all out b16 and boost that or keep the b18c4 bottom end and boost the current set up?

i think b16 will give you more hp....but the LS will have more torque....i would go with the b16 imo....

and thats exactly why i'd go w/ the b18b over the b16.

it comes down to whether or not you have the money to turbo the b16 after you put it in. i would personally go for the ls because im in a money pinch (plus the fact that horsepower is just a figure of torque).

and an h23 would be a horrible choice due to the thin cylinder walls. you would have to sleeve it to push almost any amount of boost into it.
