im about to purchase an edelbrock performer x turbo system. it comes with everything; turbine, guage, blow-off, intercooler, piping, etc. i've never messed with a turbo before, so evidentally ive never tried installing one either. are they a pain to install or is it a rather easy thing to do? on the website, it says "easy installation, comes with instructions," but we all know thats what they always say

1st time it may take you a whole day. I think most companies say average install time is about 8hrs

would it be a good idea to have my motor rebuilt first? or will it make any difference?

if your running just the stock psi on the turbo your fine but if you up the boost then rebuilding the engine is a wise choice

If you run sensible boost and get your ECU tuned properly then you should have no problem, though it can never hurt to have your internals reinforced going into boost.

well i'm most likely going to have my motor rebuilt, because there's 189k miles on it ATM haha. sad i know, but hey its a honda. how hard is it to get the ECU working well with it?

189k stock motor...i would do a minor rebuild if anything before boost. ( new head gasket, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, oil pan gasket, maybe clean the top of the pistons and get the head cleaned up)

hey it is a honda...but a bunch of us on here have blown our SOHC with no boost

in order to get the ECU tuned...you must first be OBD1 converted. unless you want to spend the money to get the AEM EMS which in your case i think is a little over the top. you could also use a piggy back for example VAFC and if your non vtec a SAFC. or even a Power FC. i personally would convert to OBD1 and get a P28 with at least a hondata s100 if i was thinking about boost

God, i wish i could do a turbo install on my car in 8 hours

I wouldn't recommend anything less than a weekend on my car

You guys have it much easier than i do though. The hardest part is definitely the manifolds on my car.

Shouldn't be a big deal on a civic for most of the smaller kits, as long as you know what you're doing. Budget a little extra time, though. Something is always missing or doesn't fit just right.

Good luck.

ditto. but please explain your def. of rebuilt. are u thinking of internals and what not or just minor stuff to be reliable when u boost her? you can do minor stuff and then do checks like leakdown and compression tests and everything to be sure she is ready for boost properly.

i just dont want the damn thing to blow on me as soon as i put the turbo in haha. i know this motor has alot of beating on it already, and i don't expect it to last too long. one of the reasons why i'm sticking with the d16 and not swapping...they're cheaper to replace. so whatever you guys would recommend i do, i will consider. def will be polishing up the internals and replacing the head gasket and whatnot, regardless if i boost her or not.

If you are removing the head, do not reassemble without ARP head studs. I do it with every single headgasket job I do. I make them buy the ARP head stud kit. It makes it so much easier for reassembly.

Also, which kit are you getting? One comes with fuel management, and the other does not. If you get the more expensive one, I don't believe you need to convert to OBD1 and tune.

it's the performer x kit, not the victor x. made for a d16y8 SOHC. they say on their website that no additional tuning is required on stock motors with this system, but if you guys recommend that i go OBD1 then i probably should, being that you guys know from experience.

here is the link to the kit...it didnt work last time i posted it, but i'll give it another shot.

There are many places and people in Cincy to get it tuned. If you need names let me know. You can also check out the local boards.

OP, very good choice on the kit! The Edelbrock is a great kit and there is a piggyback that comes with it, so there is not need to tune your ecu immediately. Everything is pretty straight forward, so you should be able to install everything within a day. Just take your time and think every step through!

Just a couple of things, as stated before get head studs they should be one of the top things on everyones list who is going turbo. Next be sure to find a tuner who can tune an auto. I went to get my turbo auto eg a few years ago and my tuner couldnt tune a honda auto on a dynapack. I had the car on a dynojet a month later and it run kinda funky. And if you choose to go for a different ems other the piggyback that comes with the kit make sure it will support an auto. I ran the greddy kit on a d15b7 for a year with no problems before i went to a 5speed ek. A after market tranny cooler is also a good idea.
