that turbo is much too small to take you to 400 hp. for 400hp youll definetely need to break the bank

Not breaking the bank and 400hp just don't mix...theres no way around that.
My advice: adjust your goals to meet your budget.

if 400whp is your goal. then you need to start thinking about a strong engine build first. lets start with which d16 motor are you planning to boost?

.50 trims max out close to 400hp, they start losing efficiency before that though. go with a .54

i personally like the t3/t4 50 trim.....250hp to 500hp....and its a somewhat quick spooler....

im not even sure where you are seeing a .50 trim giving you 500hp... thats more efficient than the larger .54 trim

heres the thing, the higher your trim number gets the longer youre going to have boost lag. on a .50 trim you will spool up rather quickly but you will be maxing out your turbo for 380hp and running it close to 50% efficient.

for a .54 same deal, only a little more boost lag and maxing out at 400hp and close to 50% efficient.

i myself have the .57 trim and people tell me that its fully boosted at 3700rpm, which is to my liking since my launches are at about that point. i only plan on running it at around 300hp, which is perfect for its efficiency which is around 80%.

youll never run a turbo 100% efficient because we dont live in a frictionless world

so what i suggest to you is based on whether this is your daily driver or not, you should look at different compressor maps and find which turbo is most efficient for the hp your going for. more than likely youll have lag issues finding a turbo that size. for instance a .63 t3/t04e is very efficient at 400 hp, but you will have terrible lag issues, full boost around 4500-5000rpms. however if you have the money, go with a GT series turbo, like the GT30. if i remember correctly it will give you 400 hp and fully boost by 3200ish rpms. but you do have to pay a pretty penny for it

im horrible at reading the maps... i plan on daily driving it for a little bit after its done and built, but then looking for another DD soon after. ill be happy with 350-400HP...

if i get a .57 trim like you and push it to 400hp would that be out of the efficency range?

400 is out of the efficiency range. the inner most circle is where the compressor is most efficient, the more you can get to the center of the circle the more efficient you will be. that circle spans from 175 -325hp, anything higher is out of that circle, likewise with anything lower.

there are other things involved with reading a compressor map, but for the sake of learning we will leave it at that. so heres how you pick the turbo that is perfect for you. you want to look at the compressor map of a turbo whos innermost circle is closest to your HP goal. then go with that turbo. just remember the high you go with the trim the longer the lag.

400whp doesnt necessarily mean that you will have a fast car, what it guarentees is your car will be powerful. however if you have a turbo that doesnt give you the 400hp until say 6000 rpms when your redline is 7800 rpms. what good is 400 hp for an 1800 rpm range?

now say for instance you want 300hp. you can use a lower trim model compressor which means faster spooling. now you have a turbo that can fully boost by 3700rpms giving you a 4100 rpm range. on top of that, since its fully boosted so low, when you shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, as soon as you drop that clutch the turbo will spool right up in less than 1 second because you didnt fall below the rpm that the turbo is fully spooled.

but if you have the money to get a GT series turbo (made by garrett) then by all means necessary, aim for 400hp. the great thing about the GT series its ball bearing design. it allows the compressor wheel to spool much much much quicker on higher trim models than any t3/t04 turbo. on a gt30r you can hit full boost before vtec engagement point.

hope that made sense to you

okay, i understand what your saying for the most part. ive always known about trim vs. spool times... and that ball bearing spools faster. i guess ill shoot for 350HP.

if i see a map, and my power goal is not in the center circle, but the one just outside of it, is that okay? i would assume it would be okay, just more strain on the turbo correct?

its not strain that should worry you. but to answer your question it would be fine to be outside of the circle, but you should aim to be in it
