so i just got an offer to trade my carbon fiber hood and rear duraflex bumper for a full turbo kit. im going to do the trade for sure but i was wondering how long my engine could handle it for before i blow it. i got a
D16Y8 with 170,000 miles i dont plan on changing internals but im putting in some ARP head studs. any estimates on how long my engine can handle it at 8 PSI?

if you drive it hard....a week to maybe a few months.

if you baby it and only on rare occasions punch it...possibly a year.

nobody can really tell you but...a motor with 170,000 miles doesnt need much help to die.

Well i dont know the brand names of the intercooler etc. but It seems like a fairly decent setup.. try and get the specs of the turbo, A/F, any shaft play, etc...

You should be fine boosting it at 8 pounds but just make sure you have a good FMU

are you serious....dont use a FMU....

FMU are garbage and will blow your engine cause that is not a correct tune....

buy a chippable ecu and go get it tuned on a dyno....

i cant believe you actually told him to use a FMU :what:

im not looking to go all out power and speed i want a turboed daily driver
but here are specs on the turbo
- T3 Flange to Manifold

Funny....thats called a basemap not a tune lol...to actually have a tune you have to get it dyno tuned....or street tune it yourself...
i dont know much man im still a noob to all this stuff thats why i came to cc for help. but is there any way to run the car safe at 8 psi with the D16 basemap on that ecu?

not really....you can try it and see how the car runs...just make sure to check the plugs a lot to see how the lean/rich the engine is running...or buy a wideband o2 system and check the air/fuel ratio that way.....

i was running a basemap at 12psi for around a year with no probs....it just depends on how good the basemap is...

Personally, i would not run a turbo just on a basemap. if you are going to do it, do it right the 1st time it might cost a little more now than alot later when things go wrong.

If your engine has 170k, u should do a compression test at the least. A laekdown test is recommended with such a tired engine.
DO NOT TRY AND TUNE IT YOURSELF!! You will need to get someone who knows what they are doing to check your A/F ratio and tune it. it can be done on the street, but you wont know what power u have until u get it on a dyno which is why i say dyno tune FTMFW!

it will blow with that attitude....
You do realize that you will need bigger injectors, fuel pump, and a clutch? But, I guess just give it a go and if it blows up then who cares, right?
