I get this loud fast tapping noise coming from my engine when im stopped and my idle is 600-800.Its a 99 Civic EX. Everyone says my valves are loose or something, so im going to get a vavle job. I have 83k miles on the car. I/H/E too. About how much does a valve job run and what exactly do they do when they fix them? Will I notice a difference in the throttle reponse at all, I feel my car is less reponsive since the tapping noise started. Im going to get my timing belt changed at the same time. Might as well. Im trying to sell my car and get a GSR swapped Hatch. Yeah! Tell me your opinion.

A valve job has many variables. If you pull the head and take it in obviously it will be much cheaper. By doing this you can expect to pay from around 150 to 250 bills, at least in my town. But this all depends if you need new valves or not. They should put new sleeves and seats on, mill the head. (Aluminum heads sometimes need to be milled on two sides V/E)

You only notice a difference in throttle response if the valves were not seating. If your noise is coming from a loose sleeve you will probably not notice any change in response.

The timing belt is recommended to be changed out at 60K if you run hard and around 80K for your mom.

^^^Dude, a valve adjustment is like $50-80 depending on location and is well worth it. Throttle response? Maybe a little better at lower rpms but nothing major.

I think he just needs a simple valve adjustment. When did milling the head, pulling the head, getting new valves and seats come in play for a valve adjusment?

I dont think that is all neccesary at the moment providing that the engine just needs a simple valve adjustment.

He didn't ask what was entailed in a valve adjustment, he asked about a valve job. So I answered his question. When you do a valve job (as asked) is when "milling the head, pulling the head, getting new valves and seats come in play".

If he had asked about a "valve adjustment" I would have answered that question.

yeah typical valve job they clean out the valves remove the head and have the head re-surfaced optimizing compression and re-storing power.

When I read "tapping noise", I immediately thought of valves needs to be adjusted especially if it was never done.

Since that was his speculation thinking that it might be loose valves because he can hear tapping noises at 600-800rpm's,

Maybe you can tell me why you would come down to a conclusion where you think you have to install new valves and seats because I dont know myself.

If you will notice I wrote "If you need" new valves. I didn't say he needed them. Once the head is at the machine shop they will check them out. Doing seats IS part of the valve job. The valves are only replaced (as I stated before) if needed. As for the sleeves - it would be very foolish to have a valve job done and not replace the sleeves.

As for the loud fast tapping he is hearing - he stated that "im going to get a valve job". Yes the first thing I would check would be valve lash. However since he is getting a "Loud" fast tapping. One thing that happens often with an import head - is a sleeve will drop. The engine will still work OK for a while but will cause a Loud tapping sound and eventually (worst case) drop the valve into the head which will take out the entire engine.

What quailfies me - The fact that I have owned a garage for 10 years and I have done a minimum of about 300 valve jobs works for me.

Hey, I totally agree. I just thought it might be too soon but hey, 300 valve jobs is way more then me so be it. And yes, there could be alot of possiblities in this case.

And I agree that it is WAY to soon to be thinking valve job - he needs to do some more checking before pulling that head.

I didnt mean to sound like asswipes today but i was hungry. Now im done with lunch and im sleepy.

I also think he needs to determine what the problem is before pulling the head..
