if there is any shaft play i would just rebuild it just be 100% safe, you dotn want it locking up when your running.
and i am sure i wont be the only one telling you this

actually ALL turbos will have shaftplay. even brand new ones. there has to be room for oil to get between the shaft and bushings

if there is barely any side to side, run it. it will be fine

the only advice i will give you is dont drive it anywhere if it blows. i blew mine at my brothers and thought it would be fine to drive ~6miles home. im about 180$ into rebuilding the turbo now, myself, since i needed a new backing plate and a new center housing and seal ring (since the center housing shredded it last night during a test drive)

a small amount of shaft play is not only okay, but necessary. the bearings expand when the turbo warms up. they NEED the expansion room.

pick up a new turbo and give it a wiggle. even on a ball-bearing turbo there's wiggle.

And what did I tell you last time...? Places will give you free quotes to check if you need a rebuild.
