Want to repaint chrome shitknob, need help

The shiftknob I have for my automatic is a chrome aftermarket pushbutton type, and I think it stands out too much in the interior. I want to repaint it flat black, I was thinking sand it down from rough to fine, then spray it a few times with metal spraypaint? Any suggestions can help. Thanks in advance!
