Wastegate Question

I am planning on upgrading my turbo set up. I currently have a Greddy bolt-on turbo kit, was very pleased of the out come but I want to crank it up a notch. So I'm deciding on getting some pistons and rods to turn the p.s.i up a little. My question is my bolt-on kit had an internal wastegate, if I get an external wastegate how does it all work. Do I have to buy a dump tube kit?

your going to need a new manifold, and also find a way to eliminate the wastegate on your turbo...or get a new turbo also.

you can use your current set up but just use a boost controller...but if your set on getting new stuff yess you will need to get a dump tube. Your Exhaust Shop should be able to make you one. When i had mine made i took the flange to them and told them where i wanted it to dump and they bent it up and i think it ran me 15 bucks

ok, couple things.

The greddy turbos are great for bolt on minimal performance. But they are very small.

If you are going to build this thing and make any kind of power, invest in a bigger turbo with equal length manifold and 38mm wastegate (minimal). Get like a 5lbs wastegate and boost controller.

Also remember, it never hurts to go a little bigger on injectors. It leaves room for upgrading later.

how much power do you want? how much can the greddy hold? if you dont plan on going above your turbo capabilities why buy a new one? use a boost controller and up the psi.

You can put an external wastegate on your set up now but it will take some work. You need to have an elbow welded onto your manfiold and then add the wastegate there with your dumptube and then just weld the flapper on your turbo shut.

A little work but not terribly difficult and will net much better results than running the internal wastegate.

Thanks for the feedback guys!! well like I said Greddy Turbo kit was pretty good ran 13.5 all day. Im planning on buying some pistons and rods so I can bring the psi up. The Greddy Turbo goes up to abt 350HP and since I have stock motor with the kit I can only have the psi at 8-9 psi the most w/ an intercooler. If i get 81mm pistons I can bring the psi up to abt 15psi or so. basically the greddy kit is useless unless I find a bigger Greddy Turbo. So Im just going to take this kit and throw it in other EM1 and Just buy new turbo parts for the EM1 im building rite now.

Well since you said EM1 I guess you have a b16 and the turbo could put out more than 350whp. Will take some upgrades but it can make it. I just put down 272 @ 10psi (stock block) and I know there is more there with some more tuning but unfortunetly I lost the wastegate gasket and boost started getting weird. I have seen a built b16 and the greddy kit with external wastegate make 350whp @ 15psi and a friend of mine just put down 290whp @ 20psi with boost tapering off at 6500rpm to 12psi, because he is still on the internal wastegate and downpipe !

Upgrade the wastegate downpipe and exhaust and you can make well into 300whp possibly 400whp with 20psi and still be very street friendly =)

Thanx Almight-Si!! What times did they run at the track?? Did he take it to the dyno? I want to run low to mid 12's this year at the track. I ran 15.2 stock motor w/ bolt-ons and on 17" rims. I slapped on the greddy kit I ran 13.5 all day. Now I want a better time. Im eventually want to hit 11's but thats next year!!!!

Well I haven't been to the track yet as I just finished the set-up and tuning on it but I will be there this summer for sure. On small slicks I'm hoping to knock off a few high 12 passes. My friend who put down 290 hasn't yet been to the track either. The guy who put down 350whp I don't know personally, I just saw his set-up and dyno plot, he didn't list any times. I would assume though with good driving and slicks you could knock down some mid-low 12's.

the TD05H-18G isn't a bad turbo, and external wastegates aren't necessary to make power. getting a better/proper wastegate actuator helps. you can do quite a lot with the turbo kit you have now by cranking the boost up and/or simply upgrading the turbo. it'll save you $$$.

do you guys have E85 up there? there's a couple guys around here making MAD power on stock internals on E85.

SiR-T, Are you runnig this greddy turbo kit on the e-manage with 310 RC's?

and what psi too?

Yea the greddy kit came with an e-manage but its not the full e-manage with all the options in it. My buddy has a GsR-T with the greddy kit and he told me there is a trick you can do with the wastegate and make more power from it. i dont really know exactly what to do but but i have to search for it. check out this guys write up on a stock B16A2 motor with turbo running 12's http://www.teknotik.com/jdmrides/forum/showthread.php?t=11133

I would definitely recommend getting a larger turbo.
