What is a good price to offer?

Hi,

I'm new to the board and looking at a 1993 Civic EX Coupe (Auto) with about 98K on it. The price is $2,900. What do you think would be a good offer for this civic. Below is more detail from the seller.

93 2dr. EX that is still 100% stock and everything still works! I bought it almost two years ago with only 45k miles on it to use for commuting to save mileage on my other new car however, I need the money for home remodeling. It currently has 98k miles on it, ALL of which is highway since I used my other car on the weekends. The oil was changed every 3k-4k miles and does not burn a drop! It has served me very well and it should do the same for you. I have the clean title in hand, both set of keys and the spare tire, jack, etc.

The things I have replaced within my two years of ownership are (I have receipts if you want them):
spark plugs
tires (at least 70% tread left)
front brakes
timing belt (87k miles)
water pump (87k miles)
all other belts (87k miles)
JDM transmission with 25k miles less than the car itself
CD player
JUST inspected in February!

The bad:
normal rust around the rear quarters is starting to pop
the exhaust will need to be replaced sometime soon
the axles might need to be replaced soon (no clicking noises yet though)

Also, what should I look for when I see and drive the Civic? I've owned a 6th Gen Civic but not a 5th so I don't know if there are any common problem areas I should look into?

I would really appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks!

Start at $2000 but don't go over $2500, use all the bad stuff to talk him down. Ask him why the tranny was replaced, when you drive it turn the music off and listen to any unusual noises. Try to rev it to the redline at least one time and see if anything sounds weird. Almost 55k miles in two years? That's a lot. Oh and ask him about the previous owner...

OK, I think I got the care for a decent price. It does have some rust in the wheel wells but I'm not worried about that so much. Most civics of this age have this.

The car is in great mechanical shape and everything works and the mileage is legit. Also, the CARFAX came back clean with only two owners. The current owner drove the car mostly on the highway for work. This explains why the mileage jumped up so fast in two years. (I use to have a long commute too so I know what that is like)

Can someone lead me to a thread on what measures I can take to prevent the rust from winning out in the wheel wells? It's not bad now and I like to keep it that way.

Thanks!
