What levels should I set my subs at?

I have two 12" JL audio subs and I was wondering what levels should I set it at because I don't want too much bass and I don't want any distortion. Any suggestions?

a 12 should be set at around 80 hz and for the gain level you should turn your gains all the way down. Turn the deck to the highest undistorted level. then from there tune the subs to their highest undistorted level

I don't want to hijack this thread but what should a 10" be tuned at?
