like you said, it's just the name... they try to offer different "classes" of vehicles i suppose... much like toyota/lexus, nissan/infiniti, ford/mercury, chevrolet/pontiac, etc.

its because they wan't people to think that they're two different companies and that they're competing against eachother just to get more money out of it. but all in all acura's are nothing but honda's with a little front end changes. that's why sometimes people with acura's where their emblems upside down so it looks like an H and somtimes honda people where their emblem upside down so it looks like an A

Saying Honda's and Acura's are the same car is totally wrong. Basically the only thing they will share is a chassis and some technology. For example, the TL is based on an accord chassis, but it's stretched and changed to suit acura's needs. The engine's are honda engines but they are different from any found in a honda. The cars have similarities, but saying it's the same car with a different body just isn't accurate.

we're not saying it's teh SAME car... they obviously aren't.. but the fact that (some of) these vehicles exist in japan under ONE make (honda) is what makes them "the same."

i think they're just capitalizing on how business in the states works... many people have beef with a certain "make name" and are usually so ignorant they'll buy a car from the same company, under a different name...

another dual company: volkswagen/audi

The reason they don't have acura in Japan is because the Japanese already associate Honda with nice cars, and they know honda can make a luxury car.

At the time Acura was first introduced in North America (1986), people wouldn't have bought a luxury honda. They thought of honda's as reliable economy cars, not luxo touring vehicles. Now days we know better, but they didn't back then. So Acura was created so the people who didn't know any better, would think they were buying something that was truly better and more luxurious than a common honda. Such measures were never needed in Japan.

Different names to suit different customers and different trim levels. When you buy an Acura, you feel that you are getting something extra. Look at the 2004 SI vs. the 2004 RSX Type-S. They have essentially the same engine, but the RSX makes a bit more power.

Look at domestics. Dodge is Chrystler, so the cars are basically the same, with minor differences. Chrystler is just for people willing to spend more $$$ as opposed to a dodge.
