Which oil to use on a 85k si with a fresh turbo kit

Ive been debating with a cuzin of mine on which oil to use? Ive always ran 5w30 castrol for as long as i can remember, or at least tried to. The question is can I switch to a synthetic castrol 5w30 or should I leave it where it is? The car is now turboed with a Drag Gen III kit,Im telling him I should switch maybe to even 10w30 synthetic but he's saying its ok leave it the way it is .

Anybody want to help ?

Thanks

I Would say its fine and no need to change it.

However, I have HEARD that as the engine gets older you should jump up in viscosity (5W---->10W). Im not sure though.

If oyu have been using using a FUll Synthetic then you can stay with it. 85k miles on a Honda is nothing. But like I was saying if you have been using Full Synthetic then continue to use it unitl you notice that you are consuming oil at a fast rate.

Now it is normal to have a little consumption since you have added forced induction. I sugget installing a Oil Catch Can to save some oil that is going to pass into your intake. I would contact the manufacturer of your turbo an ask them what is the typical oil consumption of thier kit. This way you will have a general idea of what to exspct when checking your oil level.

When you do begin to notice higher consumption rates then you may want move up to 10w30 then. Contunue to use Full Synthetic though, if its avalabe in the weight you require.

Though when you get past 120,000 I would move up in weight.

Im not useing synthetic oil now thow, would that be a problem if i switched with how many miles i have on the car now, plus it being turboed?

Basically from regular 5w30 castrol to a 5w30 synthetic on a 99 si turboed?

You should be fine. With the small clearances of the B16 you shouldnt have a problem. Your gonna benefit more from using a Full Synthetic. Try it and see how the oil consumption is. Make your decision from there.

Full Symthetic uses evtra carbon atoms which allows for higher tolerances, temperature, longevity, etc. Especially since your engine is gonna run at a higher temperature now due to the forced induction.

Plus your turbo may thanks for you it.

5w30 is like water... when its cold. So when it heats up, its going to be even thinner. Thinner = less lubrication... less lube = rough sex.. err i mean uhhh bad on the internals ;)

10w30 to 15w40 is a better choice.

Actually its thick when cold. Hence oils operating temperature is about 180-220F degrees. Thats why they recommend warming your car up to operating temperature. Instead of starting up and driving off.

5w30 will work perfectly fine.

Using 15w40 is gonna cause strain on the oil pump. So when his pump starts scavaging because you told him to use it, you will be to blame for bad information.

5w30 is not thick at all bro. My mechanic has over 40 years experience and he laughs at anyone putting 5wXX in their cars. Its not going to provide the lubrication you need. ESPECIALLY for the way we drive our cars... hard.

ive always used 15w30 on my NA SOHC since I've been 16 (20 now) and have NEVER had a problem. Add in the extra temp of turbo, and you're going to want a thicker oil.

Well lets see. if you want to compare ages and experience. I am 22 and a Automotive Analysis & Repair Student. I have been around the automotive world since I was practically 9.

You mechanic must not understand the tight clearances of today engines then. This isnt 1960 when 0.001 clearance was unheard of.

You continue to run that heavy weight in your car and I garentee an identical car to yours will last longer and have less wear when a F/S 5w30 is used

*shrug* not worth arguing about. I don't run a boosted car, so I'm not going to say how it is. Agree to disagree on this one =)

I guess this is a topic we all can arguee about, I think im going to stay with what ive been useing just switch to a synthetic castrol instead of the regular gtx. I think if anything id run a 10w30 synthetic but anything more im iffy on.

To bad your engine has so many miles on it. Because Castrol offers a lifetime warranty on any valvetrain that uses Castrol lube products continuously when your information is submitted to thier company if your milage is under 7k.

I beleive its the original 7k miles.
