why does gum go all nasty?

does anyone know why gum get all nasty after chewing it for a while?
it doesnt happen all the time but when it does it fukin discusting.

It soaks up all of the "stuff" in your mouth, leaving it eventually tasting like your bad breath. Also, as the gum base breaks down it starts to give off it's own not so nice flavor, pushing you to get another piece and buy more.
