Will this work?

Hi, I'm new to the car audio world so bear with me. I want to get an Eclipse SW9152 and would like to drive it with a Phoenix Gold Octane-R 15.0:1 amp. Will these work well together? The amp specs give different rms ratings for different ohms, and I don't know which one would go for the speaker.
Also I read it is better to overpower a speaker than to underpower it. Is this true?
Thank you

First off, yes it is better to overpower a sub than underpower it. It is BEST to match these two, but you run a greater chance of cooking the voice coils while underpowering it.

Your sub is 750w RMS with DVC (dual voice coils) each coil is 4ohms so wired together will create a 2 ohm load. That amp puts out 1000w RMS at 2 ohm, so you are overpowering it but you should run in to too many problems unless you are really really pushing this thing for a while.

It would be best to find an amp that puts out a closer RMS but that will do....If you really want to match it you could pick up THIS

wow a quick learner!!!!!!!!
soundstream any day.
What kind of cash are you looking to throw down on the sub?
I have a very low opinion of eclipse. Way to overpriced for the payout if you ask me

Really? I have their head unit, and it's very nice, so figured the quality might be the same. But I'll have around 600-800 (depending on how long I wait) for subs and a box. Any recomendations? Is 2 mid line subs better than 1 top of the line?

with that kind of cash I would try a resonant engineering, or an image dynamic sub

One last question. If I got two subs with 800 rms (this is all hypothetical) would I need a 1600 watt rms amp to drive them? Or would a 800 watt amp work?

if each sub was 800 rms...you would need 800 rms to each sub....so in total you would need 1600 rms...for 600-800 bucks...i would get a pair of jl w6v2.

now understand that if you get 2 800 watt subs and a 1600 watt amp. your car will not have enough power to run it.

A1600 watt amp at 12volts is going to consume about 133 amps.
The stock honda alternator is only a 65 amp full throttle and about 30 at idle.

With that a honda can not support a system to its true rms rating over 700 watts. And thats with high rpm calculations.

People that will tell you to get the biggest baddest subs around, just really dont know anything about car audio.

The biggest HO alternator for the honda I have ever found is about 150 amps. That can support about a 1500 watt system confortably. But with that alternator comes cahanging all charging system cables and chassis grounds to at least 0 gauge wire.

Get yourself a couple of 350 watt subs that are good, and get a good amp. I gurantee it will pound
