First of all, if your window motor is still making noise then its not dead, so your issue may be one of several; it may be a damaged gear on the regulator or simply extremely dirty window channels preventing fluid motion, thus the momentary movement.
If there's no sound from the window motor, then you may just have a dirty harness connection or a bad electrical contact elsewhere. Either way, your best bet is to take it all apart, test the motor once its out (either they work or dont), and check the complete window regulator assembly to ensure nothing is damaged. If it is damaged, its not difficult to wedge it back in with the glass until you can purchase the necessary replacement part(s).
If your window motor is seized, just remove it and slide the window up on the regulator and vise grip it in place so it wont slide down until you replace the motor . The entire process at worse case scenario is not a difficult one. Just be cautious when removing and reinstalling the glass.
