hey,

up until a few days ago, i was still using the stock am/fm cassette radio in my 94 dx hatch with a pair of aftermarket kenwood speakers inthe doors. the sound was actually pretty decent with pretty good bass for a cheap setup.

i wanted to play mp3 cds and just get more power output so i replaced the factory head unit with a pioneer deh-1900mp that puts of 22 watts rms. still used the same kenwood speakers. well to my surprise, the bass level went way down compared to the stock head unit. i went through all the equalizer settings and made sure i had the bass turned up and checked all my wiring and it still is a lot less than before. i figured a better head unit plus more wattage would get better sound but i got the opposite. anyone else have this problem?

sounds like you wired something out of phase..

Fade the stereo all the way to the fron, then all the way to the rear. See if both stages have no bass. Then fade all the way to one speaker. I bet one speaker has descent bass.

that is a phasing problem. You have a + and a - backwards somewhere

They also have a CD cleaner that has channel, sound, and polarity tests.

The sweep test is particularly fun to watch your subs on.

might sound dumb, but did you tune it, with the loud setting and adjust the bass and treble and such?

yeah i doubled checked all the wiring so nothing is out of phase and i set the eq to max bass. the new setup has bass but it's nowhere as deep as what the stock head unit put out which is what surprises me. i played some songs on the new head unit and noticed that the deep bass notes were missing. not going to worry about it. what it lacks in bass it makes up for with all it's other features.

maybe its not on the right EQ frequency, press audio till you see L(or M or H on whatever setting you have, and go to the Low frequencies)and then press and hold the audio button and it should show the low frequencies and just play with that till it sounds the best to you.

Hope this makes sense, if not ask me and i'll try to explain in in depth

did you use regular cds or mp3s to test bass, Because if you don't set the settings right on your computer when you burn mp3 cd you loose your bass qualities exspecially if you compress the song a lot. You can really tell the difference in a bass sweap cd, the low lows get filtered out. You should just buy a sub and amp for your bass and make a nice fiberglass box to put it in and just leave your regular speakers for your qualityness. thats what i did and it sounds great.

dont matter on regular cds or not, mp3s or audio...or even if the polarity is messed up. I have hte same problem, ive had a pioneer for 2 years, and the sound quality is like a 1980's boombox, and im an expert at wiring, so I redid all my wires with 8ga shielded non oxidized copper.

you said 22rms? thats probably why, since thats quite low.

Get a 4 channel amp, that will re-arrange your world.

ya a 4-channel amp for the actual speakers will make a world of difference, thats the set-up I'll run soon.
