ive been a nissan guy since i sprouted short and curlies... then my gf bought a 94 teg ls 5spd. after driving that i said bye to the datsuns and just got my self a 91 civic hatch dx. the motor and trans have been replaced with a 1.5 and from a 4spd to a 5spd. all this was done by the previous owner. here are my questions:

How do i tell what motor it is?
How can i tell what trans it is?

Also i would like to squeeze and extra 20 hp out of it but i will mainly be focusing on handling. any tips?

if there are any good threads i should read could u post a link if you wouldnt mind? thanks guys.

down by the block you should see some letters and numbers that would say D15 and another letter followed by a number thats what kind of engine you got and for the tranny i believe its the same you have to look for the numbers on the tranny. as for an extra 20 hp i would say header, exhaust, intake, maybe intake manifold and throttle bodies. you can go with some form and function coilovers if they have it for your year or just get yourself some tein s techs if your not looking to be slammed and dont have much to waste or even some progressive springs but i believe you will need to upgrade struts because those springs are more stiffer.

D series responds to bolt ons like our government responds to the recession. Ur best bet for that extra hp is a b16 or a d16z6 swap.

How ever, intake header exhaust cams and cam gears should do the trick or close too it.
