the 4cyl s10 does aight gets 25 on the highway ... yotas get about 26 - 27 but the small yota trucks are overpriced like hondas .... and the s10 4 cyl is a REALLY good engine ... nothing like a honda but theres a few out there with 200k+ on em .... 94 and newer trucks got really good
nissans get aight too
oh no.
The 2.2 4 cylinder is the same OHV motor that Cavaliers come with.
I've seen some 200k examples. They rattle like diesels. They are prone to cracked cylinder heads
One magazine bolted on intake, header, exhaust, roller rockers, MSD, coils, and pulleys. They got it to dyno at 105 hp.

Of course the S10 does get as good mpg as the Ranger 2.3 but the 8 valve Lima 2.3 has a better longevity record and the new DOHC 2.3 is similar to the Mazda 3's 2.3.
I'm thinking X-Runner (overpriced but good quality) Or Dakota R/T (12mpg FTMFL)
For the best in mpg and money, The best bet is probably going to be a new Ranger STX.
Same DOHC 2.3 as the Mazda 3 tuned for more torque (143 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 154 pound-feet of torque at 3,750 rpm) and 29 mpg
Close runner up is the Colorado Street pack:
185 HP SAE @ 5,600 rpm; 190 ft lb. 26 mpg...they been a bit pricier than Rangers though.
