anything is better than having cloth. My friends DC2 SIR-G has something else than cloth for the headliner and its 10x cleaner than what civics have. Easier to clean and keep clean.

Like I said, 5th gens have it and when you get in you don't really even notice it. It's a lot easier to clean, plus it doesn't fall because of moisture.

Say that someone opens a soda in my car and it sprays a bit. Gets on the seat, door, window and headliner. Okay, the seat is easy. An oxy cleaner will take the stain right out, no problem. The glass is also easy, just using a glass cleaner. Use a damp cloth on the door panel, and then dress it with interior cleaner/conditioner. But the headliner... that's a problem. If you get it wet it can soak into the glue and cause the headliner to sag. You can't even vacuum it, because it can grab it off of the cardboard backing. So you have to get a very damp cloth and dab it gently. Trying to get a large stain out is likley to cause a problem since you'll nbeed to soak it so much.

But the vinyl headliner... spray some oxy cleaner on a brush and scrub away. Wipe off the excess and you're good.

I'd go with a semi-gloss type of finish on the vinyl so it matches the interior better. Too shiny and it's going to look weird, too matte and it migth be difficult to clean. Semi-gloss should basically look like the fabric anyway.

For those in doubt about vinyl headliners, keep in mind that all higher end brands (like acura) predominantly use vinyl and occasionally leather headliners. Aside from the added ease of cleaning, they tend not to sag because of the heavier adhesive needed to apply them. Old cloth headliners sag due to roof heat which dries up the weak adhesives used to apply them and dries the cheap foam out as well.

When changing from cloth to vinyl, first remove the stock foam padding because its flimsy. If you'd like to keep a plush feel beneath the vinyl, add a firmer foam that shouldnt deteriorate so easily. Ive used 3M heavy duty adhesive spray on several applications (uses various foam paddings) with no issues. Its very strong. Im about to swap my headliner today & re-wrap the old one in black vinyl. It'll be a while but I'll take pix & post the process.
