So my girlfriend's brother's ghetto 16 year old friend came over and wanted help installing his crap 15"s  cuz said brother told him I knew about audio. (Not true, I just know what sounds good when I hear it. anywayz) Said friend told me he wants to "knock pictures off (my girl's brother's) wall from his house 4 blocks away." Then he heard my 13.5W1. I gave him this long winded lecture about building an audio system, much of which you see here. Now he's changing his ways.I realized that I come across his kind way too much especially on the internet. Then I thought, why don't I try to make a thread on CC to help out all those "building my first system" and "are these *Wal-Mart sold* subs good" threads. These are just some of my insights from my experience. Feel free to post any of your insights into building sytems for noobs.

First you must decide whether you want Sound Quality or sheer power, or both. You must also factor in your budget. Either, if done right, will take time on a budget, but you will be happy in the long run. Personally I wanted sound quality with the ability to get loud (w/o distortion) on occasion. There are ways to make a system ridiculously loud but thats not what I wanted/want. I listen to all types of music but mainly electronica and also rap. Being an electronica fan (good stuff ie Sasha, Oakenfold, not really club stuff; Northern Exposure:Expeditions is one of my favorite CD's) so I def lean towards Sound Quality.

FOR SUBS-
JL AUDIO. Of couse there are lots of other good name brand subs but you can't go wrong with JL. They have everything from their W1 budget line to their ridiculous W7's and lots in between. Everyone I've ever known won't even try other stuff once they go with JL. I started with 2 10W0's(dscntd, now W1's) $70 each from local audio shop. Ran off a $200 RF amp. bass was responsive and LOUD for the size/price. Then I upped the ante to 1 12" W6($500 from lcl audio shp) best sounding bass I've heard. A 12 that kept up with techno beats, was LOUD AND DEEP, and the sound quality was amazing. SQ is a thing almost nobody thinks or seems to care about in bass, but it can make all the differnece. Well that s**t got stolen. And, I once again had to go budget. Now I got a 13.5" W1 that's loud. not very responsive and the SQ obviously doen't compare with a W6 or W7 but for it's price/line, its awsome. Iv'e had people with 2-3 no name $50-100 15" subs drop their jaws when they hear then see my one 13.5W1. cost me $450 for sub box and amp. My friend had 2 15W3's in an Izuzu rodeo that was fn LOUD. At my local audio shop I heard a guy with ONE 10" W7 in a Mustang that was louder and deeper than anything I've heard. Of couse $800 sub with a $600+ amp will get you that. Others Iv'e heard that were good were Rockford Fosgates, Infinity's, and Alpine Type-r's, but like I said can't go wrong with JL.

Head Units
Iv'e had two Alpines and my current Pioneer Premier. Pioneer's my favorite but the Alpines were great too. Can't go wrong with Alpine. Eclipse's are nice too.

Speakers
Get Components, at least up front. Iv'e got Boston Acoustics and LOVE them. Go with some 6x9's in the rear. Iv'e had luck with pioneers, but my favorites are Eclipse. Oh and make sure your amps have built in crossovers.

Above all- get quality stuff don't go with packages unless they are good name brands. Rule number 2 DON'T go with Sony or anything else found at Wal-mart. Their new amps are nice (Iv'e got two, pushin speakers and sub) but the rest of their stuff is s**t. Like new seats or a JDM Squash y0! air freshener:lol: , nothing can improve your driving experience more than a good, QUALITY audio system. Don't cheap out, build it slow if you have too, Iv'e been workin on mine for two years and it's almost pretty much where I want it to be. Like an enigine, you can go the cheap fast route but it'll be s**t compared to what it could be.

Finally-My dream system.
HU-some indash flush mount non-motorized DVD/nav/HU (By the time I can afford, specific one will change)
Speakers- Boston Acoustics components(F) and Eclipse 6x9's (R) or Boston components (R)
Amps- Any quality amp that will push said speakers and another for subs
Subs- Two JL Audio 10W6's

Respond with your system building insights and/or post your own Dream system guys. or just completely ignore my semi-drunken post:cry:

Being an electronica, techno, drum and bass, trance, whatever else you wanna call it, fan as well. I've learned that an even mix of both Power and Quality is needed.

I dont have TRUE components, i do have 6.5" custom fit Front speakers, with the factory tweets still hooked up, highs are AMAZING. My 6.5's are Diamond D3 6.5i (Integrated Components, so not TRUE components) and they put out more bass then my Pioneers 6x9's, and they sound a hell of alot cleaner. I plan to upgrade to Diamond D3 6x9's in the rear, they're a 2 way speaker, just like the front.

Im also runnin 2 Diamond D3 12" subs in a custom dual chamber, ported box with a Directed D1200 mono channel amp. I would suggest, for subs, no matter how many your runnin, always go with a mono channel amp or else one sub is going to try to play one frequency while the other sub trys to play a seperate one, and its going to sound like s**t. Its also better to get an amp thats MORE then the recomended power for the subs, you can always bridge it or wire it in parralell and it really helps if you wanna bump up the Gain a few notches for a sound comp or something. Yes it will probably get distorted, but it will still be hella loud, then when you're done, bump it back down to a good SQ/Bumpage level.

Most people throw in their subs/amp and call it good. But thats just where it starts, spend some time (25-30 minutes) fine tuning your amp to get the most out of it after install, play a song with good steady bass lines (5-6 second intervals) that you know well and tune your amp to it. Tune your amp how you ghetto tune your timing, keep bumping settings up until it starts to get distorted, or the subs start to clip, then back it off a knotch or two and call it good.

My best advice... like spook4thecia said, save and do it right the first time. 9 times out of 10 all audio parts are transferrable into another vehicle. I spent close to $2700 on my COMPLETE system (deck, speakers, subs, amp, sirius satellite radio, wiring, box, and i installed it all myself) and i have NO regrets at all. Minus my shitty pioneer 6x9's, but ya live and ya learn.

Everybody will have their own personal opinions about brands, im personally HUGE on Diamond Audio everything, ive been very impressed with all of their products. My cousin ran a steady 1500watts to one of their D3 subs (rated at 400 constant) for 15 minutes straight, and it still held up and continued to put out great quality afterwards. Plus, say he did blow it. Diamond has a full Manufactures warranty where they will replace your sub for free with the same product, or equivelant product of the new model line.

Wow, a dream system and what I have are totally different things! =) I could blow $5000 grand easily on car audio, but doubt the wife would like that too much!

I am running a pretty decent setup, but certainly not the best money can buy. It might be considered a system that delivers the best bang for the buck.

HU: Alpine 9813
Front stage: JL Audio XR650 CSi, 2-way comps
Front stage amp: Phoenix Gold ZX400ti
Sub: First gen Solobaric (no kidding!)
Sub amp: Phoenix Gold 600ti
Sound deadener: Lots of Second Skin Audio products

No shame in the original solo baric. In my opinion that sub is better than any of the square solos they have now

I totally agree, the first gen was a different sub altogether. People are amazed I am still running it, but it just keeps on rocking after nearly 10 years. It doesn't have a ton of extension, but that is about the only negative about it. I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it, that's for sure.

I like my cheap system just fine.

Kenwood KDC2025 H/U $80 online
Polk monoblock Amp $300 amp I traded my old 189.00 H/U for because my friend REALLY liked the little animated car that turned when I did
Polk Momo 10" $79. at Fry's
Polk Momo 6.5 rear speakers $79 at Fry's again
Kenwood KFC1389ie door speakers $39 online
Sirius Kenwood tuner. $25 on CC :D

My ghetto ass 'teg system

It's not much more expensive than a Pyramid system and is so much more rewarding

I could use a little high frequency response.
I will probably be able to get that when I mount the E/Q and 4 channel amp with Polk Momo Components in the door and scrap those cheesy factory Pioqueer tweets

In all honesty... i'm not an expert at car audio. But I really do miss my 12" Alpine Type E. The bass was sooo smooth and responsive. Rockford Fosgate is just garbage
