4 gauge battery wire for amp?

Can you use 4 gauge battery wire for your power wire for your amplifier? I know the strands of wire are thicker than the standard power wire that come in the kits, but does that matter? Does anyone know any stores you can buy the 4 gauge power wire by the foot? (not the kit) thanks

Short answer: Yes you can get it at many auto part stores by the foot

Longer version: Yes, but audio brand kits (ie MonsterCable) wires provide better power flow and are more flexible.

Thanks, good to know. I am just going to order some of the real audio power wire online. ( I already have the other cables, and stuff, so I don't need a kit) I went to three auto stores today, and all they had was the 4 gauge battery wire; that's why I was wondering.

yeah you can use it, i work at best buy in car audio, they sell the kits and just the 4 awg wire by itself, make sure you get the fuse also, it has to be 18 inches or less from the battery

you have to cut and splice the wire then attach the wire to both openings in the fuse holder

yes, 4 gauge wire is a pretty basic size for any amp unless its like 100 watts. you might need more than 4 gauge depending on what size your amp is. any local car audio shop should have the wire by the foot in stock

hey chris i didnt know you worked at best buy...thats cool

not nearly as bad as 0 guage.

But ye you can probually get it from best buy, circuit city by the foot in the car audio sections of those stores. If not ebay would also work too
:werd:

just make sure that your power and ground wires are the same gauge...this is very important.

haha wait a while, one day you will wake up and wonder where your soul has gone too.

Worked at Best Buy for nearly 5 years, good store but f**k those bitches. Made more money in my first check at the new shop I work at to any of ghe checks I made at best buy.

With the 4 gauge, Most big box stores don't sell it by the foot. Plus the s**t they sell at auto parts store is for s**t.

When buying a kit offline I would be careful. You think you are going to save some money on the kit, but when you get it it's 4 gauge of plastic with 8 gauge of wire and crappy rcas

Thanks for all the replies!
Well, I actually got all the wires, and fuse, fuse holder, terminals etc, but I mismeasured my power wire. It was too short. I wanted to buy wire at a store so I could install everything right away( I didn't notice until after I soldered all the ring terminals on and was about to put in in my car!!!), :smackselfbut I ended up just ordering a new wire online: knukonceptz Kolossus Kable 4AWG (grounds are the same). Anyone use that? I can wait a few days I guess. =)
