why do people run afc's instead of crome, if crome has more options and is cheaper? i would just like to know for when i want to get my car tuned. what are the advantages and disadvantages of either one?

Afc's are a "hack" way of tunning. They overload the injectors (increase psi) according to rpm ranges and/or by MAP...chrome is free and ideal because, you ecu will keep a more accurate tune and the timming tables can be adjusted too. AFC will shorten your injectors, fuel pump and engine life.

unless you feel like running 28+ degrees of timing in boost, i would never run an AFC

It overloads the injectors and increases PSI?????

Not at all, you have that mixed up with an FMU.

All the AFC is able to do is manipulate the map sensor voltage going to the ecu. It reads on a .5 - ~5v scale, ~5 volts being around 11 psi or so. The ecu has a max voltage it can read stock, and that voltage is in the area that corresponds to 2-3 psi I believe. So using the afc to lean out the bigger injectors keeps you under the max voltage that a stock (unchipped) ecu can handle, while also allowing you to tune to your specific air fuel you want.

But this is completely ass backwards way of doing things. It allows no compensation for timing and as a consequence of decreasing the map voltage severely it jacks the timing way up, while you are in boost. Which is a VERY bad way to go about tuning any boosted motor.

If you want an absolute accurate description of what exactly is going on, look up J.Davis's post on HT. Has lots of pretty pictures of timing/fuel maps and their corresponding voltages from the map sensor. Showing you what exactly happens when you are running an AFC on a boosted motor.

So the only thing the AFC shortens the life of is your motor, it is fine to tune your injectors with if you are say all motor, but it gives you no room for timing adjustment, which is where the bulk of the improvement is needed.

Go with crome. As with said above. Also the cost will still be cheaper. Seeing how you will have someone tune your car more then likely. You cost will be around $150 to $200 for a chipped p28 ecu. Or even get your current ecu chipped for between $50 to $100 which is cheaper the even a used vfac.
